Dana 300?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Scouts and new to this site. I recently acquired a 1975 Scout that I have been trying to get back on the road. Things are going pretty good but I have a question about the transfer case. The previous owner intended to make a better performing off road vehicle and one of the things he did was put a dana 300 in it. I've tried to do some research and educate myself on the Scout dana 300 the best I can, but I still have some questions as to what I have.

First off, I am sure I have a scout dana 300 case but it seems to have some jeep 300 parts on it. The front output housing is aluminum but is set up for the Jeep shifter, no bolt hole in the housing to retain the shifter pivot pin. It currently has a twin stick set up. Also the rear output is aluminum but the speedometer gear is on the drivers side not the passenger side. What do you guys think about this? I also would like to go back to a single shifter and would like to use the Scout parts. Can I make that work or should I use the Jeep shifter? I hope this makes sense and thanks in advance for any help.

Is it already bolted to the trans? Scouts use what's called the Texas pattern to bolt to the trans.

Yes. Its bolted to the trans and working. Its the Texas bolt pattern but only 4 bolts. That's why I believe it to be the scout dana 300 case. The previous owner told me he got it from a hard core wheeler. I believe I read somewhere first year jeep Dana 300 short rear outputs were compatible with the scout dana 300. Is that true?

Sounds like a jeep or aftermarket rear output shaft assembly. If the twin sticks work, I would keep them. Speedo connection should be on the driver side. They may have cut off the ears from the front output shaft housing. Picture would be nice. This is a picture of the 1980 Scout D300.

Scout dana 300 speedo output is on the pass side.

I stand corrected. Winchested is correct, D300 speedo connection is on passenger side. I have an Advanced Adapter's heavy duty output shaft on the one in my Scout, and the speedo connection is on the driver side.

Here is a picture of the rear output. The speedometer is on the driver side. What does it look like, aftermarket or Jeep? The Case looks like a Scout dana 300 unless someone went to a tremendous amount of trouble to fake it. Thanks.

Jeep Model 300
There are two essential versions of the Jeep 300. The 1980 version had a shorter (about 3-1/2") rear output housing assembly. These cases may have a Jeep number #5361332 or the tailhousing may have a casting number of #C300-15-2.
The 1981 and later versions had a longer output assembly (about 5-1/2") to house the larger, eccentric style speedometer driven gear and its driving gear, integrated into the output shaft itself.
The Model 300 is found in these vehicles:
• 1980 to 1986: CJ5, CJ7 & CJ8
• 1980 IH Scout
So I would guess you have a 1980 jeep output shaft assembly there. It also looks like there is a Dana 20 cover pan on it, they are interchangeable. The Scout D300 cover is not as deep, and is often replaced with a Danna 20 cover to get more fluid capacity. Picture shows casting number for the Scout output shaft housing.
