does any one have an idea how strong a dana 20 is ? and how it would hold up to the 3.15 low gear set. seems low gears would put more pressure on the t case. would it break out put shafts? gears? crack in half? or is it plenty strong enough to hold up to the scout 345 and 33 inch tires ???

thank you for any ideas or experience with the low gear set

It should be plenty strong. If you want to read up on it, visit Novak Conversions, they have a good write up on it. A heavy duty output shaft kit would be a good idea. If you can get your hands on a Scout Dana 300, you can go with the 4:1 gear set.

The Dana 20 will hold up fine with the 3.15 conversion. The Scout Dana 300 case is a bit weak for 4-to-1 gears but they live ok(but I have seen several split in half). The Jeep Dana 300 case is built much stronger than the Scout version so I prefer running those when the application allows for it. Definitely go with the heavy duty output shaft upgrade, especially if your transfer case has the weaker 10 spline output shafts. IHPA sells both the low gear kits and heavy duty output shaft so let the parts department know what you need when you are ready.

thank you for the replies! excellent, im glad the 20 has a good history of holding up. i plan on doing this gear conversion before next Easter jeep safari ill be calling soon !

on a side note do the low gears like to jump out of 4 low like the stock gears do ?
