D44 drum to disc

I was wanting to see if it is possible to convert front drum brakes to disc? I have a set of d44 of a early 70's Scout and heard that if your doing a Chevy conversion it is highly recommended.

I did see a post on here with pics but didn't know if they started out as drum. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I hope everyone is getting out in the hills for memorial day.

Thanks to all military and what you have done for america!

Do a search on drum to disc conversion. Here and on the binder planet. I converted my Dad's 73 to disc. I used Scout parts, like off a 75. If you still have questions after the search feel free to ask away. Good luck! Disc brakes are :icon_up::icon_up:

Andy,

thanks for getting back to me on this brake set up. I have been looking all day and only found only jibberish on every site. The only thing I found was something on this forum about a guy that did a conversion but didn't give part numbers but had good pics. I just want to find out if you have to go with Scout parts and if not is it a bolt on situation or welding.

You don't have to weld anything with cheby or IH. I used GM calipers and brackets. I did have to grind some off one corner of the bracket to clear the knuckle. The hubs and rotors are IH. Here's one link.

If you want to use cheby internal locking hubs I believe you need longer outer axle shafts. Here's what I used:

stock 1973 Dana 44 axle, inner and outer knuckles, spindles and inner and outer axle shafts.

Backing plates/caliper brackets off 1975ish Chevy 4x4
used off craigslist.

1974-1980 stock Scout rotors. Raybestos 3550r

1975 Chevy 4x4 brake hoses. Raybestos bh36761

1970 pontiac bonneville brake calipers. (remanufactured) raybestos
rwc5038 & rwc5039

1970 bonneville brake pads. Raybestos pg-d52r (riveted)

banjo bolts raybestos h5373

caliper mounting bolts. Raybestos h5004

caliper mounting kit. Raybestos h5584

1974-1980 stock Scout wheel studs. Dorman 610-273

@ Scout it out. I just a spring over with a cut down Chevy 44. Had drum before, so starting out scratch. Your saying with Scout shafts and inners and outters I just need backing plates and mounting brackets from a Chevy and can still use the Scout disc I have with my Scout hubs and lug studs if I get the other stuff there you listed? The guy put all Scout stuff back onto my Chevy axle for now until I get a grand for flat top and high steer. Got a z link made for steering for time being. Trying to get it to stop well and right on the cheaps for now.

Also your profile says live oak. Is that the live oak just south of chico? I am up in redding but work down in chico.

Yes live oak south of chico.

I'm not sure I understand your question. You said you have a cheby 44. It has disc brakes right? It should also have the stronger internal locking hubs. If this is right, I would run all cheby parts on your brakes.

I'll pm you my phone number. Good to have a Scout guy near by!

So after talking to you andy I went and got a set of calipers for a 76 Scout with discs. Now I wave everything except longer brake lines and master cylinder.

Sorry its been a while! Thanks to all the guys with all the information! Its been a really big help.

I forgot to ask but can you still do either conversion for a closed knuckle axle or is that a whole different process?

I hope everyone had a good time at the IH only get together. When I get this thing going I hope to make it to the next one.
