There are quite a few threaded ports on the side of the block.
The 1/8 npt ports access the main oil gallery. They are cross drilling points that feed the main bearings. These are right above the pan rail on the oil filter side of the block. Some applications tapped in to these to supply oil to an accessory (compressor for air brakes).
The 1/4 npt ports (one on each side) is to drain the last of the water from the block. It usually has rusty crud in it...
They can all be plugged up other than for the oil pressure sender/switch.
