• To ALL forum users - As of late I have been getting quite a few private messages with questions about build ups here on the forum, or tech questions about your personal project. While I appreciate the interest, sending me a private message about these topics distracts from, and undermines the purpose of having a forum here. During the day I wear many hats as a small business owner-operator and I work tirelessly to provide the absolute best service possible to you, our valued customer. When I created this forum I rounded up some of the best minds I knew so that any tech question you might have could be asked and answered by either myself or one of my highly experienced moderators, this way the next time this same question is asked the answer can be easily found and utilized by the next IH enthusiast having the same question. This allows me the freedom to run the day to day operations of the business and minimize the impact to shipments and shop activities that these distractions can cause. It is of the up most importance for me to complete the daily tasks in order to best take care of you our customer, all the while providing you a forum to get the level advice and input you have come to expect and deserve from the premier IH shop in the country.

So with that I ask that anyone with a question about one of our build ups or a general tech question to please use the forum as it was intended. I am absolutely available by telephone to answer your questions as well but at times may direct you back to our website to better field your question or questions. Most other private messages I will be glad to answer for you.

    Thank you for your understanding.

Cooling issues!

I was on my way to help my brother-n-law out, 60mph on the hwy with really old b-rated swampers tires in my 77 Terra was like driving a wobbly ladder. So after less then 10 miles on the hwy, I turned around & headed back home. About 1/2 way there was an awful racket the varied with engine rpm, (my 1st thought was the u-joint @ the rear of my t-case) I was still moving so I pressed on. Soon I could smell coolant, so I must have lost a hose & my fan blade chewed it up?
Less than 8 miles to home, I went for it! 1st 3 miles all greens then a long red light, one big hill left then 4 miles to go. By the time I reached the top of said hill the temp gauge pegged & I was done as there was another red light. So I pulled to the side & lifted the hood as there was a good breeze to try to cool things down a bit. Upon inspection I lost power steering belt into fan which pulled the steering pump into the fan thus bending the fan & mutilating my radiator.
Almost made it home overheated horribly, hopefully didn’t seize the motor.
Got a tow home from a neighbor.
Time to get a new radiator, fan shroud, & power steering pump!

What bloody carnage! I know I'll probably come off sounding more like your dad than you'd prefer...and I don't even know the gentleman...but a guy really needs to pull over, shut down and start checking into things. A ride on a rollback is usually always cheaper than replacing an engine. Triple A membership makes it even easier. That's just not something to push unless it's life or death. Hope things work out ok for you.

I have AAA, but I was close to home? (sorta) but I am far from conservative, especially when it comes to my IH's, I really beat the shit out of them, not always in a good way. I guess that's why I have so many parts IH's
So the motor still turns over, fire up briefly just to be sure it would, time to tear it down & inspect it, then hopefully put it all back together, (good time to fix that leaky rear main seal).
So either the power steering belt let go got caught it the fan & the pulled the power steering pump into the fan or the lower cast bracket broke 1st sending the pump into the fan, I tend to think the latter as there was a time that I had a lot trouble lining up several steering pumps but always the same cast bracket?? Anyway the tear down has started...

Umm hmm. "Close to home" for me if shit's clangin' and bangin' and steam's rollin' out is about a block. I might push it that far...or I might say, it's only a block so I'm just gonna park the fucker and walk. I was brought up not to needlessly flog machinery, but your mileage may vary.

I have no morals or values, basically DGAF, but that's a subject for somewhere else….,
Being that I should tear down & inspect this 345, it needs a rear main seal & I want to pop the freeze plugs & clean all the water passages.
So back to the point I might as well drop in a fresh 392 in the meantime, also SOA on full width axles.
