Converted choke switch

Just want to make sure there are not going to be any issues with a small conversion. I have wired a pair of hella lights, which are mounted on the bumper, to the original choke switch. The power source is coming from the headlight switch and I used 14 gauge wire.

When I got the 71 Scout II, 345 stocker, the po had abonded the choke all together so I have no idea what the set up was previously, or originally. Let me know thanks.

Do not know what an "original choke switch" is??? Edit: I assume that a po put a switch under the choke "emblem" on the dash. Pre-smog, the choke would be manually controlled by a cable that ran to the choke position on the dash. IH did not change the dash layout when the manual choke "went away".

For your vintage (71?), the choke on the carb should be "controlled" by a "heat sink" on the intake manifold / engine.

My guess is you did not buy these lights new -- there should be instructions as well as wiring in the box.

Auxiliary lights should not be wired into the headlight switch for power.

The headlight switch has a built-in 15 amp circuit breaker to handle the load of the stock high beams. Adding the load of the auxiliary lights to the headlights will cause the circuit breaker to trip once it "heats up" -- your headlights will blink on and off...

Auxiliary lights should be wired with a relay. The main power draw (to the relay andon to the lights) should be from a "direct" power source (protected by a fuse or circuit breaker) -- I prefer sourcing the power from the stock fuse block; others prefer running from an after market fuse block or maybe even direct from the battery (not my recommended source - though that is in a lot of the drawings).

The power to trip the relay (turn on the lights) can be via a toggle switch which gets its power from whereever you think appropriate - since there is no real draw.

Caveat -- you should consult one of the many sites that have posted electrical diagrams for vehicle lighting on the web...
