Coil Trouble

I attempted to use my original coil on my 77 Scout with a 304. I thought it would be fine because oringinally I did not have a distributor with points. I'm trying to use the distributor that came with my kit. My engine will crank but it will not fire. I took the coil wire off at the distributer end to and, held it against the engine to see if I'm getting fire from my coil. I'm not getting fire from my coil. Do I need to buy a new coil or is something else wrong?

I replaced the coil with an msd coil. It is now getting spark to the distributor. My engine almost started and then it quit. Now I'm not getting spark to the plugs. I also noticed that the distributor that came with my kit does not have a key that fits into the notch on the side of the distributor cap. The cap moves easily after it has been clipped to the distributor. What should I do? I thought it could be the plug wires but I would have had to ruined them all simultaneously.

There should be a place for the distributor cap to index into the distributor. Give me a call if there isn't one so I can send you one. I will also find out why your's didn't have the distributor set-up correctly.

Did you get spark again yet? The distributor cap issue will have noting to do with this. Check for proper grounds and any loose connections.

The notch on a factory Holley dizzy is part of the vacuum advance mechanism. Without it, ya get no notch. Could this be the problem?
