carb problems

I have a 72 Scout 2 with an eight cylinder engine. Wouldn't start-- rebuilt the carb-- holley2245-- I didn't adjust it quite right and didn't replace the float but had someone who knows more about it than me do those things. It ran fine for a few days. Now after maybe running it out of gas, it won't start unless with starter fluid, then will only stay running if you feather the throttle-- won't idle. Ideas?

You could have a cloged fuel filter, especially if you ran it out of fuel. Good chance you sucked up all the crap at the bottom of the tank.
You can check by removing the fuel line from the carb and connect some clear hose to it and run it into a coffee can or some other container. Crank the engine over a bunch of times and watch the can, if you see fuel your pump is working, if you don't see fuel running you probably have bad pump. If you get fuel then replace the in line fuel filter. Crank the engine and have someone look into the carb to watch for fuel, a pair of goggles is a good safety precausion. I dont think the 72 has a filter inside the tank but don't quote me on that, I could be wrong. If you don't get fuel after the filter change you prolly got crap in the carb.
Also, don't go crazy with starting fluid, a little goes a long way, that stuff is like super high octane. You don't want to damage anything. You can get the same effect with a little bit of regular gas.

You might have to clean out the carb again.
Post your findings so some of the senior members can help you out. There is a bunch of real good guys and gals here.

Update from lincoln27

I waited a bit and it started up. It runs now, though it tends to idle high. After a while of running, it will idle too low, then stall. If that happens, I have to put some gas in the carb to get it going-- then it will run again but idle high. It sat for several years before I recently bought it, so maybe it's gunk in the fuel line-- I plan on running it daily and changing the fuel filter-- see what happens-- what do you think?[/quote]

Put some fuel system cleaner directly into the breather for the carb float bowl (I like the amsoil pi myself) and let it sit a couple hours before starting, then put the rest in the tank. Add an extra filter in line before the pump (I use one designed for efi so the screen is finer) adjust the carb idle speed after running a couple days and warming it up.
