I have a 1978 Scout II with the stock 345 and all emissions components have been removed .I have been running a holly points dist. Build code 427908-c91 I had my prestolite dist. Burn up on me a while back I also got the holly 2300 off of the 71 parts Scout II . I just had my heads redone and the machinist who done the job accidentally put the retainer clips for the valves on the lower groove of the valve stem causing my valves to be too tight and we didn't notice it until it had chewed up some lifters and ground down my cam so I ordered a new cam from powerhouse parts here in my area I just to keep it simple so I opted to go back stock so I bought the the melling sih-1 which was supposed to be stock and maybe it is I dont know alot about cam lift and duration and am trying to learn . The melling sih-1 cam I installed has these numbers

(specs @ 0.50 cam lift)

opens closes duration

int. 21 btc 25 abc 188

exh. 19 bbc 17 atc 198

cam lift cam gross valve lift center line c/l
duration lift
int. 260 .262 .445 111

exh. 252 .236 .428 110

rocker arm ratio is 1.7

now I have already installed the new cam and lifters and checked the bearings and the bearing were in spec and visually in good condition so I didn't replace them. When I had the pan & timing cover off and the cam & rockers removed I flushed the engine out really good with diesel and got quite a bit of metal shavings but no big pieces really . I installed the cam and lifters using a generous amount of lucas assembly lube on all new parts I installed and am using lucas break in oil additive tb zinc plus mixed into rotella t and delvac 1300 50/50 mix to break in the cam and lifters I got this recipe/advise for this mixture from an old friend of mine and close relative of ed iskiderian. Now I have not fired it up yet because I am unsure as to where I need to set my timing marks at on my gears they are currently set at the timing marks like they were when I tore the engine down but I am unsure if these marks will be ok for the new cam. Any help will be appreciated. Here is a picture of the timing gears before I took them off so they are not lined up at the 23/dot like I did when I installed the new cam

If you are not going to degree the cam assembly, then simply install the drive gear set with marks aligned straight up just like the engine was originally assembled.

Ihc did not degree the cam on these motors, the stock timing setup was all that was needed.

We do degree the aftermarket camshafts simply because for the last 50 years, the manufacturer/grinder of those cams makes mistakes when machining the units. It matters not who the grinder/supplier was, they all make mistakes.
