• To ALL forum users - As of late I have been getting quite a few private messages with questions about build ups here on the forum, or tech questions about your personal project. While I appreciate the interest, sending me a private message about these topics distracts from, and undermines the purpose of having a forum here. During the day I wear many hats as a small business owner-operator and I work tirelessly to provide the absolute best service possible to you, our valued customer. When I created this forum I rounded up some of the best minds I knew so that any tech question you might have could be asked and answered by either myself or one of my highly experienced moderators, this way the next time this same question is asked the answer can be easily found and utilized by the next IH enthusiast having the same question. This allows me the freedom to run the day to day operations of the business and minimize the impact to shipments and shop activities that these distractions can cause. It is of the up most importance for me to complete the daily tasks in order to best take care of you our customer, all the while providing you a forum to get the level advice and input you have come to expect and deserve from the premier IH shop in the country.

So with that I ask that anyone with a question about one of our build ups or a general tech question to please use the forum as it was intended. I am absolutely available by telephone to answer your questions as well but at times may direct you back to our website to better field your question or questions. Most other private messages I will be glad to answer for you.

    Thank you for your understanding.

CA Smog for '76 to '99 vehicles that need tailpipe sniffing

wondering what my california friends with '76 to '80 SIIs are thinking. last week got word from a buddy that owns an auto shop that the machines that test our vehicles are no longer supported. his machine was on lease and he just returned it. there is one other shop in town that has a shop owned machine. i would imagine that since it is no longer supported, he will eventually just take it to the dump.

it seems in the not too distant future, anybody in california (with the exception of a few zip codes) with a '76 to mid '90s vehicle will not be able to get a smog check and renew registration.

anybody have any insight?

Usually when they stop supporting a machine, it's because they want you to step up to the newest model. If the shop can't afford to step up, they stop doing smog tests. That is how I have always heard it from my smog test stations.

That sounds like governor moonbeam's plan.
no doubt. on the heals of the EV executive order just a couple of weeks ago and "certified clean idle" sidelining commercial diesel vehicles, i would be surprised at anything sacto has planned.

thanks. i'll have to talk with my other shop and see what his plan is. i also think that shops don't want to hassle with sniffing tailpipes anymore. just a lot more work for the same price as an OBDII scan. i'd be happy to pay more.

yesterday, i did run across AB1972 and AB2225 which are working their way through the legislature. probably stalled due to COVID. not sure this helps, this applies to vehicles with historical value or collector vehicles. sounds like pretty strict usage requirements.

even though i'm not surprised by what comes out of sacto, i struggle to think how this could be a defacto banning of pre OBDII vehicles. i would imagine that would impact a lot of people that rely on their vehicles for daily transportation.
