breather holes in Dana 44

The Dana 44 rear axke I have been working on is from a late 800. I can find one breathing hole in the driver's side tube, but no hole in the same position on the pass. Side. On an older axle, I found a hole on each side. I am sure that I am not missing it, so could it be that there is only supposed to be one breathing hole?

I'm going to go on a limb that perhaps one of those holes that you found on the older axle was tapped for a bolt to hold a brake line junction down or something similar. Take a closer look at the "extra" hole and I bet you will see it's tapped with threads.

One breather hole should be enough.
