Hey all. Just installed the IHPA borgeson steering conversion w/ vibration joint (part# borg-strjnt-kit-2) and wanted to give a quick report.
My Dad bought this Scout (mine now
) brand new in 79 so it's been in our family forever. I know it's mostly original. The only suspension mod is SOA with caster correction. No body lift. 33x10.50 bfgs.
Steering really wasn't too bad. I have a straight steer, steering box reinforcement plate (older thinner one), and new spring bushings but the truck would sometimes decide to "shift" in highway curves. Pucker factor about 7 out of 10. Eventually discovered this was coming from some slop in the rag joint.
After install that symptom is completely gone.
Other observations are, I hear the power steering translate through the steering column into the cab due to the more solid connection to the steering box. I also hear and feel more bumps, especially on gravel even with the vibration joint. All just observations, not necessarily bad considering the fantastic improvement in highway curve manners.
I was able to install the dd shaft without completely disconnecting the steering box but it was very close. I did remove the 2 forward bolts and allowed the box to tilt a bit to get the old rag joint assy. Off but the final install of the shaft that I cut to length went in with everything bolted up including both new joints. It took a lot of very careful measuring to do this and it was tight but it went in.
Hope this helps someone. Very happy with the purchase.
