Borg Warner auto ???

Did they ever come with a married d20 or something? I'm parting a '66 Travelall (2wd torsion bar) and plan on putting the 304 bw auto into a '69 4x4. The 202 tcase May be on it's last legs (I'm tired of the bucking and bouncing every time the t85 is shifted)

trying to think ahead.

The borg warner slushbox was the auto trans offered in the Scout 800, coupled to a Dana/spicer 20 transfer case inna "married" mode.

Here's a pic of one on a dolly in the shop now.

These trannys used a 6 spline output gear with the 20 degree helix and 26 tooth count. That is Dana/spicer p/n 18-8-31.

This same gear was used in the manual tranny (t18) applications in s800 also (with 1" steel adapter).

The corresponding d20 transfer case would have to have a corresponding p/n 18-5-10 9 intermediate gear installed in the case also. Those gears must "match" due to two different helix angles (and tooth count) that were used over the years by Ford, Jeep, and ihc.

The d20 case that was designed to mate with this tranny could be either a single stick or twin stick version. I just removed a twin stick version of one of those a few days ago but haven't torn into it yet to verify the internal gear part numbers. This one was behind the t18 and I have both input gears from both trannys...they are identical and their respective p/n's jive.

Here's a shot comparing the overall "size" of the bw 11 Scout 800 tranny (no transfer case installed), with a tf 727 out of a 2x4 Travelall, '73 vintage (short tailshaft version).

Ya can see that the basic packaging is about the same.

I did this photo comparison for a friend back east, I'm building him a 2x4 727 to swap into a '64 travelette in place of the bw tranny that has taken a dump.

Sorry to hijack but that would be the same as is in the aristocrat I plan on getin from Mike I.?? I remember you said you had another one I could buy from ya..what are the weeknesses of the bw 11? Any way to improve the cooling?

Robert

p.s. Nice watermark!!

Yep Robert, I'm savin' the one I have for ya! However, the one in the first pic with the d20 attached May not be mine???? It looks like my shop floor though, but I don't have the transfer case for this one here now!!! Am I confused as usual??? Could be the guy who I got it from pulled the tc here at the shop and I don't remember that. I know he still has at least two d20's at his place. And I do have a good input gear for this tranny as ya can see it in the pic.

Anyway, those slushboxes are shit for strong! And just as heavy as they are strong!

In the earlier apps of those in the fullsize truck stuff, they had no cooler of any type, just the "air cooled" torque converter with the integrated fan. Notice the air cooling slots in the bell housing? The one I described in that travelette in virgina has never had a cooler on it, the ports are plugged.

Ez enuff to plumb that tranny into a conventional radiator with an in-tank heat exchanger, but that wouldn't be an original "resto" deal on yore new ride. So next best thing could be a regular add-on tranny cooler in front of the radiator with a thermostatic control.
