This will be the official start of the betty project!. The mtnscout 80 project was stolen by my wife, so I was left to find/build yet another dd for myself.
I struck a deal for a 62 Scout 80 p/u in trade for an old boat that I had. To each of us it was a good deal so we arranged to make the trade. I meet him in frazier park (about the 1/2 way point), since I have sold the dodge duallie I've been left without a "tow" vehicle. At least I dont have anything that can tow, that has a hitch or is running. So I borrowed my sons explorer to get the boat there. The boat weighs around 2000#'s, trailer and all, which was within the fords towing ability. The Scout on trailer.....around 4000#'s.......not within the fords abilities, first problem. I figured I'll just rent a 1-way truck/trailer combo from uhaul to do the job.
Got to flying j's and meet, (the explorer got worked pretty hard) did the exchange. My wife didnt go with me but called me there and said "just use the aaa once a year 200 mile tow to get it home". A quick look at the card says that I have 3 weeks till renew time, and I havent used a tow this year..............so what the hell!!! So I call aaa, 1.5 hours later we're on our way home with a f750 rollback following with betty on it.
Betty is now home, in the driveway waiting to be re-awaken'd and return to a life of fun and frolic. The p-po did some weird butch job on the front and rear shackle mounts so that the spring sits inside the frame to lower the thing. So now it looks like some strange kinda flat-track truck with wide low-pro tires on it. (kinda cool, but not) no big deal since I've been slowly parting the 71 Scout II out and saving the frame/drivetrain for a possible later project.
So.............yup another s80 on a sii frame project will be started, known as "betty the bomber". I will clean up the sii frame and gear, leave the stock Scout II's 345-4v/t-19/d20/d44/d30 combo, with p/s and p/b setup for now (it had a bw11, but made a deal for the t19). So untill betty runs and drives on her own there wont be any drivetrain changes made.
The players;
I will be moving soon (long story), so there wont be alot of progress made, except to get them moving under there own power for easy trailer loading. The new place is 22 wooded mountain acres, with a big-ass barn, that after a bit of repair will make a great project shop and a place to keep all the vehicles out of the weather.
