Best caster for a sua

Hey guys need some advise. Im going to do a cut and turn on my 72 sii. It has a 4" sky jacker and 5" shackle. I put in 6* shims to correct caster and it drives pretty good. But, I dont trust the pinion angle while in 4x4 it binds and I can feel it in the tcase.

So..... Im ready to cut and turn. The job itself doesn't scare me at all. Im a decent fabricater and reasonably skilled welder. I understand the steps to get it done right. What im not sure of is what to set the caster at. The manual says 0* is stock, but stock caster sucks. So should I put some positive caster in? The few threads I found said betwees 5 and 6* positive. Am I on the right track? Thanks for the help.

Yes your on the right track. Just make sure your c's are tilting backwards. (top leaning back) issues of concern. The pad on the pumpkin will still need a shim top and bottom of the the leaf pack. The passenger side mount can be removed and re_welded in the correct location/angle
Jeff sells a u-joint for this issue too. The problem starts with the stock power plant leaning back at 5° to start with. So just a small change creates the front drive line binding issue.

You can look at some of the build up's for ideas too.

Well since you're happy with the way it drives with the caster you have now, measure the caster to see what you've got. Then when you do the cut 'n' turn, set the pinion angle to where you want and set the caster back to what you have now.

Craig you confused me a bit. I understand the pinion angle has to be changed, either shims (the method im choosing) or reweld the spring perch. But positive caster is positive caster I guess the c's lean back when 5* positive caster is achieved?. The driveline angle is acceptable at the tcase for me. Its the pinion angle toward the ground that is causing the binding, even at crawl speeds.

It does drive ok, wanders a bit still. But if im going to go to all the work of a cut and turn, May as well make it as good as I can get it.
