Bendix calipers

Apparently I have the stock bendix calipers from a 78-79 "weep as my Scout pulls you out of that hole" cj-7. I'm not sure if my axle came with the brakes or not. My problem is, I know nothing about these calipers and the driver is loose and rattles a bit. Anyone out there familiar enough with these things to help me figure out how to tighten things up a bit?

Hey Jeff! The whole caliper wiggles on the axle by hand. As you can imagine it rattles a good bit driving down the road. The piston and pads are working fine and tight on the rotor. Just want to stop the rattling on the axle.

Another shot of the caliper. There's no grooves in the rotor. It's just dirty, lol.

Ok then, have you taken it apart yet to see what is worn ? Maybe it's missing that c clip ? The 1 that's on the bottom, that you force in when you put the caliper on the bracket, then you put the allen head bolt in it.take a pic of the bottom part, where the bolt is,maybe we can see if that c spring clip is in there., thats about the only way it can be loose or wiggle.??????Jeff

I haven't taken anything apart yet. It looked like the wheel hub had to be pulled to do anything but, I didn't spend that much time on it either. I'll dig into a little more tonight. Any chance you could give me a run down on the break down or a link to a schematic?

Bout all you need to do is,spray that bottom area of the caliper and bracket, you'll see a big round headed bolt, flat, with a allen screw head in it.,with wd-40 or what ever you use for penetrating oil.it has a plate with 2 half moon groove's in it,an take a punch or a chisel an hammer it either out towards you or in towards the motor...Jeff

I texted a couple pics to ya. Hope it works. One question - is the bracket (that the caliper is attached to) loose as well? Or is it just the caliper itself?

Then it's time for some r&r. Take the caliper off then the rotor off. The 6 or 8 bolts that hold the bracket on need to be tightened up. As old and crusty as the axle u-bolts are, you May consider replacing those bolts & nuts. While your at it consider new bearings too. Safety first. Or that chit will roll right off with the wheel attached

Ok, so I was right on one thing, lol. The rotor does have to come off to pull or work on the bracket. Yeah, I need to check the bearings any ways so I'll get started on that tonight. Guess I need to go ahead and order a manual for these beasts so I know the torque specs.

It's fixed. Thanks Jeff and scooter! The spring clip on the reatiner plate was flat against the plate. I'll be getting another spring clip but, for now, I popped it off, increased the bow and put it all back together. No more rattle.
