I have a 3.54 ratio front axle that was cut and turned. But the carrier has rust on it. I have two options really I guess. I can try to scotch brite the carrier clean and run the front axle as is or swap out the carrier for a new one which probably means new bearings. The rear axle I'll have to swap out for another with the same gears or just re-gear the current one. Though I have put in new rear wheel bearings but none of the other rear axle bearings have been replaced in 160k+ miles
the question is if I go through all the fuss of putting in a new carrier should I use the 3.54 gears or get 3.73 the intended use is off-road, daily driving, towing oh and light snow plowing. The current configuration is 1979 IH Scout II 345 auto with 31's 2 or 2.5 suspension lift and 2 inch body lift and 3.07 gears until the axle swap happens. The max tire size I currently plan to go with is 33's but not until I wear out the 31's.
If I replace the carriers regardless I'm planning on doing at least power locks. Oh and if you can Jeff can I get a quote on everything needed to set up an axle for new carrier and/or gears. Do you have "setup" bearings that someone can borrow w a deposit and return when they are done?
Thanks
Rich
