anyone have a 60's erra travelette?

Hey guys/gals,
long time no posts!

So I am eyeing a mid 60's travelette and was wondering if anyone has one in the albany area. Basically its been a while since I've actually been around one. I would like to see one up close before I take the 4 hour drive to pick one up to make sure its going to fit my needs as far as cab space.

No gotta live one, but here's a pic of the one our buddy ccctrumpet snaked in relay fashion outta nashville a few years ago. The pic shows it loaded out in louisville, ky at Bob k's place on it's way to virginia, just outside the d.c. Beltway.

I'm building a dodge dually rear axle for it and a tf727 right now, that rear axle currently under it is a converted single wheel.

There is one similar with a camper shell sittin' on the access road just south of albany off I-5 headed northbound. Red with white two-tone. Been watchin' it now for few years, I believe ken roth has checked on it in the past...settin' behind a barn with it's azzend towards the I-state on the right headed north.

Is that the one in the storage lot? I think I have seen it in there also.

How does the cab on yours compare to a Chevy/Ford full size crew cab? I love the looks of these but want to make sure it will work. My wrecked out f350 crew cab was a good size in the cab area.

Not the one in the storage lot with all the rv's,...that one is on the west side of I-5 across the other access road! It's green. I was wrong about it being south of albany, it's north, take exit 239 on then a quick right on santiam bluff's, it's right there in the cusp of the intersection, only thing there is a house, some outbuildings and a barn, it sits between the exit spur and the barn, faded red with a red/white aluminum canopy.

Having owned several 80's f350 crews, and slept in the back seat of a few squarebody t'etts and t'alls, I'd have to say the roundbody t'ette is actually a bit larger volume-wise behind the front seat than the fords.

Keep in mind...the one in the pic I posted has had the frame stretched by a pro truck body shop at some point by a factor of 18". It obviously was originally a short bed version and had a long bed mounted with service body fenders, an ideal trailer-toter for a large family like curt's!

if for some reason looking at wes' doesn't work out, Dad has one in oc. It's not as close as harrisburg, but it's closer then 4 hours.
 
Thanks guys, I will try and head down to harisburg but if I end up in the oc visiting family I May swing by the wiese's place.

I'm half tempted to drop the cab and bed onto my f350 frame and running gear. Except its a long bed and the travelette is a short bed.

Anyone know of a thread where someone swapped a travelette cab onto another frame/engine/running gear, say f350 style?

That travellette out by the bluffs belongs to my friend jason curtis. It is on his back lot facing the freeway. It was his first truck and is not for sale. Least not last I bugged him about it? It is a v-8 rig with a manuel trans and 4x4. He brought it out with him from oklahoma.

We need to get jason involved with our group and motivated!

Under normal circumstances I would but he runs his own business aswell as a regular 40+ hour a week job for "the man". He barly has time to sleep. And also somehow squeezes college in there too! I'll mole it over with him when I see him next. :crazy: I don't recall the year of the truck but it is the duel headlight setup (four light total). ???

No one that I know of. I know several people have swapped in the running gear but a full frame swap is not gonna match very close. I have both a f350 and a couple of t-ettes the f350 is much bigger and at least 12 inches longer over all. The cab on the f350 is quite a bit larger. It's not a project I would want to take on thats for sure. Not that it wouldn't be bad ass when complete.

do you happen to know what the frame width on the mid-late 60's travelette's are compared to the an early 90's f350?

I love the idea of having the travelette body on that frame/running gear for easy towing capabilities plus the IH power plant.

No I don't but they are the same as the any pick up t-all of that era. Hell mayben probably knows off the top of that rusty ol dome of his. If not let me know I can make a phone call and get it.
 
All fords up through I think '86 (maybe beyond) use a 34" frame width, kind of an industry standard. Same for all the IH light line rigs up through the 1500 series (and the '74>'76 500).

See this thread, I've been heavily involved with this "frame width" stuff now for the past several months. And the '62>'68 roundbody light line trucks are all 34" frame width, in fact the frames are near identical with the '69>'76 stuff:

The common frame width spec is exactly why the aftermarket truck bed/body business could exist, as well as the bolt-on mount kits for snow plows, etc. The body companies could all manufacture beds, service fenders, boxes, etc. That would install on any Ford/IH/chev/gmc/dodge pickup or cab/chassis rolling stock as long as attention was paid to wheelbase.

I've delt with many IH light line rigs over the last ten years that have had the frames either stretched or shortened professionally in order to accommodate all types of aftermaket beds.

The dodge axle I'm currently building for that '64 t'ette in the pic I posted will be exactly the same dimensionally as the Ford axle I put under my '73 IH pickup. And you can see the "universal" flatbed from the f350 donor is exactly the same rail width as what would have been installed onna IH cab and chassis back in the day.

The big difference is not in the rail width, it's the fact the Ford rails in the hd stuff are "flat" across their length fore and aft, where the light line IH stuff is a drop frame. No big deal, every truck body manufacturer/installer delt with that in some manner. I have a '64 1300 dually IH out on the lot now that had a horse box on it originally and the frame rails were filled and plated" to allow the bed rails to mount directly.

Great information!

The frame width was what was concerning me on a possible swap idea. Building mounts and acomidating a difference in frame drop does not worry me too much. I have decent experience in 'shade tree fabbing', lol.

The truck I was looking at has sold but the idea is still in my mind. I still need to check one of the travelettes out in person to make sure the size will work for my family but I am now on day 12 of 14 straight at work so time is just not there right now.

I really appreicate the help and information guys.

If anyone does come across a thread where someone drops one of these onto a different frame I would love to see it.
