Any tips on removing windshield?

So I have a 67 travelette I will be needing to remove the like new windshield to repair some rust issues. The windshield and gasket are new/like new and I would like to keep them in that condition. Any tips on how to go about achieving this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

Sacrifice the gasket and don't risk cracking the windshield. A new seal can be bought for around a hundred dollars of less. Reinstall using a small diameter cord and some dish washing soap for lubrication. If the gasket has been in for more than a year, it won't be easily reusable anyway.

Just my opinion.

I'll second that. The old gasket will be hard and not reseal well and should get the windshield out without cutting the gasket, good luck getting it back in with a hardened gasket.

Will the gasket harden up only after a year or less of being installed?

I can't really see away of getting the windshield out without destroying the seal. Dad and I removed one out of a 68 truck, we used a utility knife and stuffed the blade up under the seal on the outside of the windshield. I cut all the way around a few times making sure I was hitting metal underneath. They I simply got in the truck and stuck the windshield with the palm of my hand near the top drivers side corner. Once it popped lose I moved around the windshield doing the same thing until it was loose. Then we just pushed it out.

Take it from a guy who has removed hundreds of windshields!!! Dont risk a good glass that you'll have trouble finding a replacement for!!!.
Yes removing it can be done with the proper tools and lots of care and patience. But a seal is cheap, cut it with a razor knife, use a solution of soap and water to make the blade slide easier and this will also loosen the seal from the channel. Push with the palm of your hand not the heel and ease it out.
Installation is easiest with the rope method. 1/4 or 3/16 nylon rope is best and loads of soap. Rap the rope in the seal channel on the rubber and cross them at the bottom. Set the glass in the channel and pull the rope around ,working from side to side til you meet at the top.

Bummer, I was hoping to be able to salvage the like new seal since there over $100 but at least that is cheaper then a new windshield, if and when I could find one! I have to pull the windshield eventually to start on the cancer repair up in the cowl which was why I was asking.

Thanks for the tips
Mark
