Aluminum 4 cyl thermostat housing?

I just recently came into ownership of 2x early Scout 80s. One, a 1961, has a serial in the 16xxx range. It has a strange aluminum one piece thermostadt housing/water neck. I have heard about them secondhand but have never actually seen them before. Of course it is on the aluminum intake. Was there any specific pro or con that led to the development of these? Or not using them in any of the rest of the production? Did they use the same thermostadt, or a different type?

Re: Aluminum 4 cyl thermostadt housing?

The later two piece water neck and thermostat housing will mount right to the earlier intake.

It's my understanding the one piece, cast aluminum unit was the original design used on these motors for ag applications, it was also used on some of the turbo-motors.

I found two of the aluminum housings at our core supplier last Thursday but they were rotted way beyond any kinda use. I did pick up a few more of the more common stat housings with the small bypass hole that was oem on the 152, those can easily be drilled for use on the sv apps.

We've just received a major supply of rs370-pattern thermostats directly from the manufacturer, in all setpoints. These are the latest production units, not the chinese knockoffs that some vendors market.

This pic is a 152t intake with the one-piece water neck, notice this manifold also has an "'active" heat riser passage, though it May have been mounted originally with an intake gasket with the heat riser blocked such as used in an lpg application.

This particular manifold is in the wiese collection.

Another view...

Since these engines are very ez to cool, even with the small radiator and no shroud from the original s80 production, I see no benefit in retaining the one-piece neck.

All of my turbo 152s had the later cast iron riser/neck. I was actually wondering if the one piece could be used for my bored out 266 for some bling without compromising cooling. Might look 'interesting' on the rpt manifold next to the 4160. Sounds like I need to pull it to see if'n it is rotted out to see if it would be a liability. It came on a lo mile airport utility 61 Scout 80. The rear 1/2 of the Scout fell off.

Did the aluminum t-stat housing use the same thermostat as the cast iron?

Re: Aluminum 4 cyl thermostadt housing?

The aluminum housing uses a different stat like the ones below.

Jeff advises me tonite...he's got several of those "early" t-stats on the shelf now and available.

So would this neck be worth using or is it merely a novelty? I am a little concerned (but not a lot) about cooling in the 800 as I increase the displacement and compression of the 266. I think it will be running a little leaner on the primary circuit. Novelty is ok, just as long as I am not creating a problem for myself.

Sorry for not originally posting this in the other forum, the thread kind of evolved on me.

We need to find the housing seal. Wo this seal in good working order this style of stat is a bad thing. Iirc the mt 113 shows it but I don't have the part number right now.
