Access to fuel sending unit

My 76' Scout has a heavy skid plate under the fuel tank. I ( like most ) am having trouble with the fuel gauge and wanted to verify the sending unit but didnt want to mess with the rusted and seized bolts holding on the skid plate. I carefully cut an access to the sending unit which is placed between two body struts. When I'm done with the rebuild I plan on covering my cancer ridden rear deck with a sheet of diamond plate ( after sanding and priming whats left ). I will have a hinged access to the sending unit for future replacement.

I'm almost finished replacing the entire floor in the bed in my 73 Scout, that I've documented in my build thread. Might be a consideration instead of covering up rust laden growth. I'm considering doing what you are doing with an access door right above the sending unit with a hinge.

Start soaking all the bolts for the skid plate with some penetrating oil like bead blaster for a few days. Worse case scenario, you will have to replace the bolts & nuts.

Probably a good plan. I May just do that in the future. For now I'm cutting away the worst spots and sealing the rest with good ol rust-oleum. :icon_mrgreen:

How did you know where to cut into the floor and what did you use to cut the hole. My fuel tank is a 33gal. But it is not the same as the ones available now. The sending unit also has the fuel line in it ,the same as in the smaller tanks but the fuel feeder is longer as is the float..I have been trying to find a replacement but no luck.does anyone have any ideas?
