I'm going to be putting new floorpans in the Scout and I haven't welded since I was a teenager so my expertise is a little rusty. I'm just looking to pick up a cheap welder for this job only. I found an inexpensive 70 amp arc welder at the local harbor freight and I'm just wondering if it will be good enough to do floorpans. Feedback??

You'll need to run gas with .023 wire for sheet metal welding. If the welder will do that 70a is enough.

I have a hobart handler 180 which is about as big as you can go with a 120v circuit. It does a great job on sheet metal and the arc is nice and smooth. It replaced a century 80a economy welder and the hobart is far superior to weld with. Ya get what ya pay for when it comes to welders.

I agree that you get what you pay for, I just know ill only be using it for this one job. Gas though?? The welder I'm looking at is a stick welder....

Get a wire. Stick would be tough to work with for pans. With a wire, you can dial down the temp really low. You be hard pressed to not keep burning through 16 gauge with a stick. Bought my mig at a pawn shop for $100.

I think I'm using .030 if I'm not mistaken. The mig is so much more forgiving and easy to work with. You can buy a new one for less than $200. I use flux core wire so no gas. It's idiot proof. (which is what I need!)
