9 stand rocker shafts unobtainable?

I've got a 75 304 with 9 stand rocker shafts with boat rockers. Rebuilding the motor and the shafts are in good shape except for some wear on one spot on each shaft where the rocker rides. You can feel the slight groove. It appears that the 5 stand is available but was wondering if you have a pair of 9 stands. Machine shop said the shafts were usable but felt better if they were replaced.

A nine stand rocker shaft was never designed for use with boat rockers. The transition to the five stand shaft was incorporated into the boat/stamped rocker arm system. It will "work" if turned upside down, that is the only way a boat rocker can lubricate...and that is dependent upon if it's clean internally.

Boat rocker shafts must have the oil holes facing towards the head.

Welded rockers must have the oil holes facing away from the head.

Our source for nine stand rocker shafts comes and goes, we have a very limited number of usable/used nine stand rocker shafts now. A five stand boat rocker shaft can be "modified" for use in a nine stand application by a competent machine shop capable of locating and drilling the appropriate holes, and then cleaning the modified shaft internally to remove any machining debris.

All of the knowledge base we have regarding ihc rocker assemblies for I-4 and sv engines is in the engine tech sub-forum:

We also discuss this issue throughout other member's threads posted in that sub-forum.

Hrm it might not have been designed for that but on my 75 IH appears to have done it... 9 stand with boat rockers... The witness Mark should be on the same side as the oil holes correct?

How much are the 9 stand shafts?
