800A hood question

I have been laboriously scraping the undercoating that the po sprayed on the inside of the hood of my '67 800a. I am puzzled by the sheetmetal tabs that extend downward from the hood. There are 5, about an inch in length, and they are in a line from side to side about 18 in. Back from the front of the hood. Perhaps someone with an 800 can give me some insight. To me they do not serve any useful purpose and are great hand cutter/snaggers. I am thinking of cutting them off.

On my 80, there is a rubber strip about 2 inches wide that screws to those tabs.

On my 800B, the rubber strip is screwed further forward on the hood, but the tabs are still there and not used. I am not sure if this is the original hood on this vehicle.

Btw, 67 is a little early for an 800a. Are you sure of the year/model?

Where tha hail ya been pinejohn??? We thought ya gave up!

The other john is right on the money...s80 and s800 had provisions for a rubber "curtain" seal that sealed the underside of the hood to the radiator core support. That was an underhood air flow management design that forced air through the radiator core at speeds above about 20mph instead of allowing air to flow over the top of the core support and be "wasted".

This has been a very common air flow management practice regarding engine cooling and hvac system, design since the early days. It's still an very important part of proper engine bay design today.

It's always amazing that such attention to detail was incorporated into the oem s80 design while the entire electrical system could be best termed..."meltdown waiting to happen"!

That rubber strip is a compounded material of about the same thickness as a typical innertube (do you remember what an innertube is???) but is somewhat stiffer in composition.

Attached is a copy of the s80/s800 parts list page (mt-113) for the hood assembly. I've circled the callout for the hood seal, for some reason IH did not see fit to incorporate it into the line art.

Thanks for the replies. I guess that since my truck is a v-8, the radiator sits farther forward, and so doesn't sit under those tabs. There is a rubber strip that is attached to the sheet metal channel that reinforces the leading edge of the hood. From what you say, michael, that probably seals atop the radiator of the v-8.

Yeah, michael, I have been missing in action. Part of it is just an overload of stuff at work that has kept my hobby time to a minimum. Part of it is that I have been doing body work, of which there seems to be an endless supply. I hope to get the body off the frame in the next several weeks, blast and paint the frame, and then the fun part starts. So I will be back in the thick of it pretty soon.

Just checkin' on ya john!

Ya can see in that parts list that there were two different seals, one for the fourbanger apps and one for the 266. And of course, the 266 was inna Scout 800, not a Scout 80. The mt-113 covers both models for all model year variations.

Milchael, I am intrigued by your comment about the electrical systems. What is their weakness(s)? I had a '63 80 that was only two years old when a dead short fried the whole harness.

With the '67 I am building, I am planning on running the wires myself rather than messing with a harness. So, what should I do and not do? Obviously you can't give me a detailed rundown, but in general is their an approach I should take? This probably should go in another forum, but I am tired and lazy, a bad combination.
