800 Alternator F wire

This is mostly for clarification. I have read the stickies on the forum and this is still a place of confusion for me with the 800's. Scout is a 67 800 v8 266. My alternator is not producing any output. I'm going to go get it checked tomorrow and replace it. It looks like junk so I'm sure it's toast. I have some other issues though that I would like to resolve so I don't mess up the new alt.

Now the f wire from the regulator to the alternator, is there supposed to be power from the regulator to the alternator on this wire? With the alt in I tested it and nothing. Alternator is a 3 wire, batt, ground, and f. There is an r connection as well on the alternator but I don't have a wire for it, is that not used?

I'm thinking of doing the remote starter relay as well but as you can tell electrical isn't my strong point.

Thanks

I'm hoping I May have answered my own question, but if someone with some real knowledge wants to chime in, that would be great.

The field wire should be hot to activate the alternator, and since it is not, points to a bad voltage regulator. Since I'll be at the store tomorrow a new vr is on the list. Anything else that would cause the field wire to not get juice?

You are correct. There should be power to the f terminal when the ignition switch is turned on and the field relay closes. You should see battery voltage to the f lead at that time, and you can hear the relay make with the switch going to "on".

No voltage can be either a bad wire/lead, termination or the regulator.

Thanks greg, it was the voltage regulator. Replaced it and the terminal on the f wire and everything is up and charging. Found it funny, price of the regulator $30.00 price of a new alternator $40.00. Ha. Moving on to stopping leaks
