I have a 1974 Scout with the 258cc motor and a manual transmission. I put it in four wheel drive yesterday which I don't do very often. Was driving on a pretty easy dirt road. After I took it back out of 4h back into 2h and unlocked the hubs it starting clunking. Actually drove about 20 miles and it started intermittently engaging the front axle. Someone driving next to me saw the front axle engaging and disengaging as if the front axle was catching in the differential. Locked and unlocked the hubs and it still did the same thing. Fine for a minute or two and then clunking and catching.
Finally just put it back in 4 wheel drive and it engaged and it runs fine. Whenever I put it in 2 wheel drive it does the same thing. I am thinking maybe one of my locking hubs is broken and is not fully disengaging. The right front hub has a spot when moving it to free where it sticks.
Any suggestions?
