727 Temperature sender location?

Where is the best place to install a temp probe for a temp gauge? The sender is 1/8 npt. And the tranny is in the truck and will not be coming out to install the sender...

Depends on "what" you want to measure / track...

I would say the pan... Forgot -- in the side of the pan - not the bottom of the pan...

But if you have a cooler, you could put it in the line before the fluid goes in the cooler. Or, even in the line coming back to the trans...

If you are not taking the trans out, I would not try to tap the case if there is a "boss" for a temp switch somewhere on the case...

Sometimes, tmi can be "annoying"...

I had my mechanic put an oil temp gauge on a corvair engine that he was building -- the temp was what would be considered "high", but never suffered an oil replated "failure" -- before or since... And, the temp never varied once the engine was up to operating temp.

The correct "factory" location for a 727 temp sender was in the rear servo pressure test port. That plug is a 1/8" npt thread form.

This pic is a dodge motorhome trans which has the temp sender installed, center left in the pic on the rear of the case. Your case will have a simple plug in that location.

The transmission temp senders were installed in motorhome apps along with medium duty dodge trucks...IH motorhomes May have had a temp sender also but I've not worked with one of those units though with the exception of the case bell pattern, they are identical to the dodge mh version in the tailshaft area.

The aftermarket temp senders are normally located in a boss installed in the side of the pan where an add-on drain plug goes. You can install the sender boss on one side and the drain plug on the other side if desired.

Thanks! A picture is worth a thousand words. (although I did read your words as well)

I would like to wire up a simple warning light on my dash. Any suggestions for temperature activation range? I read somewhere that that sensor is long to put the probe in the right location. Any truth to this?

Thanks for the info provided here. In all my internet searching this post by far provided the best info on this topic.

I have these gauges and I have also red warning light's listed in the " for sale ad's "...Jeff
