727 2wd tailhousing

Ok...there were prolly at least 18 different "tail housing"/output shaft combos used in a base tf 727 by at least three different oems...what is your specific application that you need this part for???

Since this is an IH-related forum, I "think" you might mean an IH, 2x4 pickup, t'all, or Scout II???

And do you need just the casting? Or all of the output assembly with shaft/governor/bearing/bushing/seals?? Need detail!

Ok ya got me,
I'm in the planning stage of building a 2wd lowered 60's t-all
I've got several 4wd 727's mostly from Scout II's
I thought I could just change the tail housing??

& yes I do need all of the output assembly with shaft/governor/bearing/bushing/seals

or I guess it May be easier just to get a complete IH 2wd 727??

Anyone wanna trade for other IH parts??

Now I understand!

Jeff and I both have a supply of pickall 727 cores for 2x4 and 4x4 apps, those would be the same with the "short" tailshaft and a "yoke" output retained by a nut just like the bull gear onna sii with the d20 adapter tailhousing.

I hate to part out irreplaceable transmission assemblies but I "might" have what ya need if the core I'm thinking of has a cracked case that is not weldable.

Let me look through the stuff tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

I do have several "buildable" 2x4 pickall cores including one in progress right now that is being done for superduty tow use and conversion for a '64 travelette.

Also...where are you located? That would impact "shipping" possibly...or I might have some other ideas for ya based on who I know...where you are!

I'll be back...

I'm still researching parts interchange here for ya.

From the transmission you want to use for this project...there is a ihc part number stamped into the case rail/pan interface just below the shift lever/throttle pressure control. If that was a chrysler app tranny, it would have the vin for the vehicle in which it was originally installed and a chrysler p/n.

I need the ihc part number for the tranny in order to determine if these if the output shafts are the same or if they will also have to be swapped.

Take a look at this thread, especially post #16 for a comparison of tailhousings for the 727:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/transmission-tech/588-torqueflite-727-guapo.html

The dodge motorhome tail is the strongest system ever used inna 727, the yoke for that spline is massive.

I need to pull a tailshaft out of a sii case and compare with the output shaft out of a 2x4 pickall. The part numbers for each are majorly different but the only way to tell if they do interchange is a full blown measureout.

But that motorhome tail assembly is available and has a fresh output bearing. And the yoke for it is available also...nearly half again as large as a sii yoke, but spline is the same.

I'll try and do the sii vs. 2x4 pickall shaft comparison tomorrow, I need to know this stuff anyway!

Darren,

completed the tailshaft research today. What you propose (swapping just the tailhousings) will not work. I actually replicated that effort. The machined area of the sii output shaft where the bearing seats is a nominal 7/8" too "short".

So ya either need a complete 2x4 sii tranny, a complete 2x4/4x4 pickall tranny, swap in a pickall output shaft and housing in your sii case, or use the dodge motorhome tranny output shaft and housing like I have in your sii case. That item happens to be exactly the same stuff that was used on the IH motorhome app.

If you want complete info regarding this open a new thread in the transmission tech sub-forum.

My dsl service is down, I'm onna near-dialup speed cell modem so I won't be hanging on the forum too much until I get my connection issues worked out.

Well thanks!!
I've got a few leads on a complete 2wd 727
one is even local...
Your help is much appreciated....
