• To ALL forum users - As of late I have been getting quite a few private messages with questions about build ups here on the forum, or tech questions about your personal project. While I appreciate the interest, sending me a private message about these topics distracts from, and undermines the purpose of having a forum here. During the day I wear many hats as a small business owner-operator and I work tirelessly to provide the absolute best service possible to you, our valued customer. When I created this forum I rounded up some of the best minds I knew so that any tech question you might have could be asked and answered by either myself or one of my highly experienced moderators, this way the next time this same question is asked the answer can be easily found and utilized by the next IH enthusiast having the same question. This allows me the freedom to run the day to day operations of the business and minimize the impact to shipments and shop activities that these distractions can cause. It is of the up most importance for me to complete the daily tasks in order to best take care of you our customer, all the while providing you a forum to get the level advice and input you have come to expect and deserve from the premier IH shop in the country.

So with that I ask that anyone with a question about one of our build ups or a general tech question to please use the forum as it was intended. I am absolutely available by telephone to answer your questions as well but at times may direct you back to our website to better field your question or questions. Most other private messages I will be glad to answer for you.

    Thank you for your understanding.

7.3 Powerstroke??

Hello all, when I originally picked up my 78 terra I did so with the intent to pull the gas burner and drop in a new 7.3 I already have. However this terra came with a rebuilt IH 392 already in it and from what I understand these 392's are very stout on the low end so now I'm in a quandary.

Has anyone else here attempted to drop a power stroke in a Scout? What are some of the pitfalls to watch out for? I would really appreciate any input pro or con. Thanks!

Even though you have a 392 the 7.3 is longer wider and heavier than the 392. Size does matter and it will be tight, but it can and has been done.

The 392 is a thirsty beast it does have great low end pull but a 7.3 is better and easier on fuel. Depending on what you use it for you May wish to change your axles for heavier ones. I don't believe the 7.3 will bolt up to the automatic or any 4 speed that came originally with your Scout

Thanks for the input. Once I'm finished with the restoration I intend to use this Scout as my daily driver and was thinking that the diesel would be best. Then someone else can have the 392 for a killer trail machine. Have you done this swap before? Also can anyone tell me what a fair price would be for this 392 if I sell it?

Ihave not done it with a Scout but rather a Travelall. Ih64scout has a thread on the binder planet under the diesel section which he details the process from start to finish

I have a project where I have a 6.9 with a turbo in a Scout II. I did have to remove some of the firewall for the downpipe, but it's in there. The 7.3 ps will probably need a little more room because the turbo sits farther back on the engine.
