62 scout 80 no brakes

Ive had my Scout for about 2 months now. Drove it all the time no real problems. Then as im commin in to the drive way to make a compleat stop the brakes started to pulse and then it became really hard to stop.. If I pumped the brake it would start to give me pressure. I heard a kinda of rubing grinding sound from the passenger side wheel. Then pop. And no brakes went to the floor no brakes.....

I checked lines., all lines are new. Res is full..... Not sure if I need just a bleed or master replacemnt.

Im not to sure where to start.... What do u think?

Thanks for the help.

Look for a broken drum or a shoe that has lost its lining.

With the onset of a pulsing pedal I feel it is more likely that a drum has failed.

Another thing is that your rear axle has bolt on wheel flanges. Possible one had lossened and is on its way off of the axle shaft. Look at the center nut and see it the cotter pins are in place and that the nut in tight.

I agree, you have a brake set that has tossed a lining. When you pull the drum you will see chunks of friction material. This is a somewhat normal occurrence with brake shoes with "bonded" friction material.

This is a wake-up call to perform a total brake reconditioning operation on all wheel sets.

There are two completely different brake sets used on the Scout 80 platform. The "standard" brakes would be a 9" drum on all four positions. The option brakes were a 10" drum in front and an 11" drum in rear.

I generally don't use over-the-counter replacement brake shoes, and finding the correct parts at any auto parts house is going to be near impossible (the 11" brake set was common though as those are bendix-pattern). The 9" brakes use a really strange pattern shoe set. The 10" brakes were a lockheed-supply item and those shoes will never be found across the counter.

I have all brake shoes I deal with re-lined with riveted linings by a local supplier.

Detailed information regarding dealing with brake systems used on Scout 80 and Scout 800 are in this thread:

This a typical 10" lockheed front brake set after freshening. This one has bonded shoes since I had a set of nos on the shelf. That is not rust on the shoe foundations, that is the resin used to glue the lining material to the shoe table.

This a pair of reconditioned 11" bendix rear brake sets for the s80 and s800. These have locally-re-manufactured shoe sets with riveted lining material.

Re: 63' Scout 80

Hello, im currently trying to fix my brakes...and eventully over hall my 62 Scout 80. Its in great shape altho I have no brake pressure. In my drums it gose about half way down and dosnt give me a hard pettel at all. Any idea?

Now I plan on putting a turbo diesel in this Scout. And upgrading my axels anyhow. I really liked what u guys did here.
I was wondering would be be smarter to just get some axels and go disc brake?

Eather way if theres anymore info on how to go about modifying the Scout II axels.

Thanks

rob

Nice yeah I took it apat and noticed after awile where my leak was. The piston blew up on me and one of them springs got wedged bad. I got it all back together and bled but I cant get a hard pettel....its really soft and gose about half way to the floor befor I have any pressure. I asked a local restore guy he said possably I have a wrong master or resivor. * small and large tanks. Hes saying 4 wheel drum should have both the same size resivor. Im a little versed but I really have no idea with this old of a truck.
Is there a distrabution valve for the drum brakes?
And what dose the master look like for a 62

would it be smarter to upgrade my axels? And go disc from a Scout 2 as done in ur buld up pages 63 green Scout?

Or do they make disc brake conversion kits for the 62 80?

Thanks for any ideas and help

I combined your post from another thread to keep things simple since you were already posting about the same issue.

The original master cylinder for the brakes would be a single distribution system. One master feeds four brakes.

All the original moving parts May be replaced right now with new parts.

Some of the original brake sets have had a remotely-mounted "booster" mounted using parts from various vehicles, some work, some don't.

Yeah I see that the master that the prev owner installed is a 2 chamber master.... So to make my bakes work properly it would be a good idea to find the org. Going to check out IH invintory if anyone has any suggestions please post thanks for the help. And yeah that was deffently a wheel cylinder busted up :p

thanks for all the help guys

Any dual circuit master cylinder won't ever be correct for the oem brake sets at the wheel end unless both master pistons are sized the same as the oem master cylinder diameter. That would be 7/8" bore size.

Cant take theses lousy drum brakes anymore and im going disc..... Ill be posting more pictures as I go and will be sharing all the info I discover such as which parts I used and so on... Hope to be done by tomorrow...
