61 152 Fuel Problem

I've got a 61 152 with a 1904 Holley 1 barrel list 2352. It had been running fine. The other day I went for a short trip and it stopped running, almost like it ran out of gas. Thought it May be the fuel pump. Replaced it and still nothing. So I took off the fuel line at the bowl and ran it in a jar, cranked the engine a few time and there was plenty of fuel in the jar. Next I attached the fuel line and removed the bowl, again cranked the engine and fuel came through the needle & seat into the bowl. Next I replaced the bowl and removed the diaphragm enrichment valve and filled the bowl with fuel. When I worked the accelerator fuel squirts into the carb. I then replaced the diaphragm enrichment valve, started the engine and it ran up until the bowl ran dry then it shut off. I open the bowl and very little fuel dripped out. I did a rebuild and replaced everything in the standard rebuild kit except the check balls. My metering block had plugs not screws and I didn't order the hardware kit. I am at a loss, any help?

It sounds like your needle is sticking and the bowl is running dry.

- have you tried spraying carb cleaner through the inlet and letting is soak for a bit?
- did you replace both the needle and seat when you rebuilt? These are matched pairs and need to be either both replaced or neither replaced.

Make sure the bowl gasket has not swollen and is holding the float up... Mine did that.. It would on occasion quit running like it was running out of fuel. Took it apart and found the bowl gasket in the way...

I now have a glass bowl on it...:winky:

another possibility is crap behind the inlet needle. Gets pushed by fuel flow into the small inlet valve hole. That it a reach as it works with the bowl off.

As it turns out it was partially clogged siphon lines inside the tanks. As it sat it would let enough fuel in the lines to give me some initial flow but it would not keep enough of a flow to keep the engine running. I figured this out after rebuilding the carburetor; replacing the fuel pump; replacing all the lines and finally removing the tanks and replacing the siphons.

Well, now your fuel system is dialed in!

The best advice I got about working on engine problems - test and verify in order of the energy conversion...
Fuel --> carb --> spark/compression --> exhaust
