392 rear main

Have an oil leak right at the front of the bell housing. I was told it was the pan gasket when I bought the vehicle.... I just took the pan off and the gasket looked like it could use a replacement but not like it was leaking enough to get the dripping and blow out of oil that I have. Enough to make a little mess everywhere I park but not enough where I have to fill it everyday.

After pulling the vent off the bell housing I can see that there is some build up of oil on the inside of the housing. Rear main seal??? If so how hard is the install? I am fairly mechanically inclined my biggest limitation is the tools at my disposal.

See sig for vehicle info

It could be the rear main, but with the amount of oil you seem to be losing?? I suppose if you had a lot of crankcase pressure from blow by, you could be blowing that much oil by a leaky rear main it is possible.

Can you raise the Scout on jack stands, start it and slip under it for a look? I'd do that before tearing it apart.

The other place is above the crank/flywheel. That is the rear cam bearing cover. You should be able to see the very bottom of it with the clutch cover removed.

Both the rear main and cam cover are accessible with the trans and flywheel out.

So either way I need to pull the tranny out to take a look? It seems that in that area between the 2 is where I am having my leakage.... As for amount of oil I am getting a little puddle bout 6"x 6" when I park it. It is more than what it was when I bought it so whatever it is it is getting worse.

Smell the leak! Is it engine oil or is it tranny lube? They smell totally different.

Pull the lower dust cover, crawl under while it's running and watch the leak points. Many rigs lost the dust cover years ago! And all standard safety warnings apply when laying under a running piece of junkiron (or even a non-running piece!).

We gotta extensive thread around here regarding this issue from just two weeks ago, but dam if I can find it and I'm mr. Search hizownself!!!

Bail me out Robert!

Can't say I have ever smelt a leak before... Tasted yes, smelt no. What does tranny lube smell like? And come to think of it, it has been shiftin on the rough side from second to 3rd. She normally aint my daily driver but someone has my commuter at the time so I didn't think bout the shifting and I have build up of junk (whatever is coming out) on the tcase as well....hmmmm

and I think laying under it is just as dangerous as riding in it!!

If you are having to add oil to the engine everyday or so I would say the oil is engine oil.

Yes to the trans needing to come out. Have you eliminated att lpotential leaks from above like valve cover and lifter cover etc?
I would hate to tell you to pull the trans only to find out it was an easy fix.

It isnt an everyday deal to add oil, and I don't drive it enough on a regular basis to give an interval of how often I fill it. It just seems to have gotten worse with the size of the puddle under the Scout. The block looks great from the bell housing forward everything is clean no leaks, drips, or build up... Once you get to the bh though its a whole different story. Unfortunately I work nights Wednesday - Saturday and was hoping to have this sealed up by Monday for a snow/ski run... Found out that someone cleaned the garage and threw out my gaskets and seals!!
