392 questions

Hello all, just brought home a 73 1210 witha 392. My first project is to fix all the exhaust leaks, manifold gaskets, doughnuts, all new pipe... So my question is, is it possible to have heads from a different model IH engine on my 392? I have been having trouble finding the right doughnuts and I cracked one of the manifolds, so I had the lps order me a manifold for a 392 and the one that they got is a little bit different then mine. The manifolds that came on the truck have a two bolt collector and the ones that the part store ordered have three. Any thoughts , thanks

All currently available new exhaust manifolds (center dump only) will be a three ear flange. Those are supplied to the parts distribution system by dorman. Those were the "last gen" parts done by ihc and used in bus and medium duty applications. In some cases, the frames of some vehicles (not Scout II) are "notched" a bit to allow clearance. Both of my '73 1110 4x4 daily drivers have the notched frames, but clearance for wrenching is still somewhat limited but doable.

However, I've not had any luck in sourcing a three bolt flange for connecting the headpipes except by robbing boneyard stuff. I know some specialty exhaust component wholesalers have that stuff so we'll keep looking.

We have tons of used, nice quality exhaust manifolds on the racks here at ihon, most are the two bolt/double ear version.

If that is the case ll needs to update their documentation. They show the two bolt cd manifold as available.

Also found the two bolt sii center dump many other places.

I guess I didn't explain this sufficiently...

The dorman part is not an oem item, but is an aftermarket part that can be sourced through any parts jobber that warehouses dorman product. And dorman operates many lines of parts under many different "brands".

Any part sourced through light line is sourced by light line either from some aftermarket suppliers who offer an oem-quality item in a supply arrangement, is nos stuff that was part of the original light line deal way back when, or is nos stuff that has been acquired from many sources. Many light line parts are actually newly-manufactured right in the facility in oh.

Sss is a totally separate operation and they have many items that are not "light line" items, just like ihon carries many CPT and rpt items which are proprietary and in-house supply. In addition, they carry some ihc/navistar items that are not marketed to other light line franchisees. Ihon does the same.

And then...we have many aftermarket warehouse distributors in north america who May have still on hand from years ago when many parts such as the exhaust manifolds (including the rear dump items) were common.

The point I was attempting to make is...new production exhaust manifold castings that are commonly sourced today through dorman by any parts jobber or wd are going to be three ear items

They got you the 674-187 which is the md truck 3 bolt version for the 392, you need the 674-188 the light line 2 bolt version which works on all center dump ll engines and on some of the smaller md applications. Unfortunately the cataloging is wrong and list the -187 as the part for "all 392" and the -188 s the part for "all 345".
