392 exhaust valve guides

Robert/michael: thanks for your input. So as it stands now, I take it that ihonjeff is the go to guy should I elect "factory" spec'd guides as opposed to catalog guides. I've been planning a rebuild for the 800's power plant for some years now. Actually in all modesty I should say dream vs. Plan. I intend a stock motor.

Greg,
Jeff has access to any part an engine build could need and if the part was not right there he/we could get it quickly.

I think the only guide that posed a problem was the stock 392 .414 id guide so if you are doing a 304 or 345 the .375 id guides are real easy to get. The bronze guides I turned Jeff on to are only one of the many sources he has access to.

Seal are only a quick operation as you know for a reasonably equipped machine shop and not that expensive I might add.
Many shops will call it part of a head rebuild to machine for seals if desired.

Michael,

I ended up having the intake guides machined to accept viton positive valve seals. Since I now have the correct size exhaust guides, I am going to leave them alone and use the stock o-ring seals on those. Since the valve stems are .414 there really is no other option. No one (that I am aware of, but I have been proved wrong before, I think in this thread actually!) makes umbrella or positive valve seals for .414. They go from .375 (3/8)to .437 (7/16). This would have been one of the advantages if I had gone with the Ford valves discussed above. The stems would have been .375, so I would have had a choice of several seals to choose from.

Thanks for the clarification Jesse! I agree fully with your analysis! The positive stem seals will be most effective on the intakes!
