345 V8 2WD Standard to Automatic

I am looking at late 60's to 70's 1 ton to 1.5 ton IH trucks for purchase. Most are 2wd flat beds. I am a 100% disabled veteran and I only have part of the muscles and the nerves are all messed up in my right leg. I am on my 5th knee replacement, so with most trucks being standard tranny, I need to switch to automatic. My uncle is going to do it for me, as my neck is fused, and left hand partially paralyzed. Working from up top isn't as bad, but from under neath is really bad. What will fit a 345 V8? Would a 700R4 fit? I have a very small 5 acre farm that i mess with to keep me going. It is an 1880's farmstead, and we had a 72 IH truck when I was a kid, so I have to have one. I am also going to be getting a 40's or 50's for my wife. My uncle is going to build it. He is in his 70's but still builds cars. Thank you

First off, Thank you for your service!

To answer your question, the easiest swap (and least expensive) would be to put a 727 TorqueFlite from another IH truck or Travelall in it. You have to use the IH version of the 727 as the bellhousing is different compared to 727's used in a Chrysler product. For shifting, you will also have to source the steering column for automatic, or go with an aftermarket floor shifter (which is what I would do).

Check your local junkyards and see if any IH pickups or Travelalls are out there from 1972-75 as those will have the correct transmission and you can get all the needed parts. Or feel free to give our parts department a call to source any of the needed parts 530-274-1795. We have several 727 cores here and use a local reputable transmission shop to go thru them. We will also have the needed flexplate, spacer and bolts. For the kickdown assembly (which you will also need)we recommend going with a Lokar kit which we also sell here.

Thank you. Just the info that I needed. It will be great to just put one order in and be done. Maybe I'll just build me a little console with a couple of cup holders to mount the floor shifter to. I would defiantly have you all get it rebuilt and all first. What would be a ballpark figure? my email is kyumanaz@msn.com
