345 or 392?

I just picked up a Scout motor with a 4bbl intake on it and the serial id numbers read: 242544 with an "a" stamped slightly above it. This is located just above the passenger side motor mount. How do I cross reference these numbers? Thanks

I agree with reuben.
I'm only aware of the v304a engine, and no others sv-8's built to the "a" specification.
I know the 4 barrel intake would imply it is a 345 or a 392.
However, could this have a 4-to-2 carb adaptor mounted on the intake?
I'm sure you will figure it out soon.

There is a 345a used in 79 at least and probably 80 as well and possibly earlier and the spread bore 4bbl intake was stock on the 79-80 sii so it is a good possibility that it is a 79 345 if it has the standard thermostat/bypass housing set up. Of course after 30+ years who knows what has been swapped around.

Hmmmm, I haven't seen any documentation of a v345a, not saying there isn't one but we'll see.
My guess, and that is what we are all doing without seeing the engine ourselves, is that it is a v304a.
With the six digit serial number I still say v304a, that started production in 1970 + or -.
We'll have to wait for feedback from the original poster.
Maybe he could post some photos of the engine in question?

I have a 79 345a which is why I said I know they made them in 79 and probably for 80. Can't say I made a notation of the serial number before I installed it in my 1510. I'll see if I can get it today. I did confirm it's casting date indicated the block was cast in 79 since the engine turned out to have been rebuilt when I got to looking at things while re-dressing it to fit.
