345 engine pulley information!

Question: I am reassembling the pulley(s) on the water pump - I do not recall the # of pulleys or size that is supposed to go on. I see the crank balancer has 3 grooves, but am wondering how many should be on the water pump. On my non a/c 77 scout, I had three pulleys the same size, and one pulley (closest to the water pump housing) a bit smaller in diameter. I do not see any reference in the shop manuals for this. When duplicating the 77 scout pulley's on my 79, with the smaller pulley closest to the water pump housing, I am getting interference with the water pump housing( a bit of surface "metal to metal") rubbing.
Would like to see a diagram of the correct pulley #'s, configuration, if someone has it?

Thanks, Richard

i could go out and take a picture of mine, its similar, 345 with ac and power steering

would that help ?

yes, it would, and thanks. I am wondering if there is a "shim" between the water pump and the first pulley? As I mentioned, the first pulley on the water pump (of the three) is of smaller diameter.

Thank you.

The small diameter pulley should not rub the waterpump. It is there for use with a smog pump. When no smog pump is required a shim spacer goes there instead to keep the stack aligned with the crank pulleys. Then the next two pulley's are for the alternator and last is for the A/C. If you have power steering, an additional pulley is bolted onto the crankshaft to spin the power steering pump. FYI the power steering belt does not go around the waterpump.

Thank you for the update. This is what I need to know. I am thinking that maybe I might need to a miniscule amount of grinding on the waterpump house. The "rubbing" is almost not noticeable, but just enough to barely hear. OR maybe the small pulley is warped? I will see and report my findings.

Thank you for the correct identification of the pulleys. It heals.:icon_eek:

Well, a ground off maybe a 1/16 of material from the water pump. One of the flashings was rubbing. not noticeable. Pulleys turn just fine now. Also, looking through my "parts" I found the attached. Fits right over the water pump hub. I am guessing that this part was for some type configuration? anyway, I will not use it. Thanks for the help.

a picture worth a 1000 words:

thank you for the info re: pulleys. Had another question:
I have the IH shop manuals for my 79 traveler, but I don't see any illustrations/pictures of the engine with all accessories attached,.i.e. a snapshot of the front of the engine standing/facing the engine with the radiator removed. Are there any pix such as this available? I have a 345/4bblTQ/727TF with p/s, p/b, ac, smog pump. Just need to be correct on startup. Thanks for any reply.
