3/4 Ton Axles

Hello all,
I come from a Scout II background so kind if in a haze.

I have come across a 1968 Travelall with what look to be the 3/4 ton axles. They are six lug and have a huge center opening. I have only seen pictures as of yet, but will hopefully see it in person over thanksgiving.

I have done research and found that the drums are basically non existent if they are needed, but it does seem there are brake kits out there with new springs and shoes can be had too.

I have also seen where people have swapped out axles for others, which is where I am still confused on what to get as everyone is all over the place and there is still the issue of being able to find the axles for he swap.

I am not sure what I am really asking. If the drums are in good shape, just change the shoes and springs and have fun driving her if I pick her up? How is the stopping power with the drums? Nothing large or heavy would be towed. Maybe a mini airstream or a fishing boat for the lake.

Would it be worth picking up the old girl and changing the brakes and cleaning it up to drive around down and go camping in or should the axle swap happen and if so, what is the rough price people have spent? Maybe have it done by Jeff?

Like I said, I am not sure what I am asking. I love the look of the Travelall and my new wife has wanted one since she has seen one from a club member. She is excited about as I am, but I am just getting nervous about the axle issues with the the 3/4 ton 6 lugs.

Thank you

Drums, in good working order, are fine unless wet. Split rims require tubes though which is a drag. Some here have had tubeless rims welded to their budd 6 lug centers with good results.

Buying an old truck is a luck of the draw. You just can't predict everything you inherit, kinda like getting married :) you know things going in, but not all.

The only service problem in the immediate future I see could be the rims for tire service. Many tire stores won't service light vehicle 2 piece rims. IH used budd rims which were good, and a truck/light truck store might squeeze you through; but you'll be better off with one piece rims. 6lug are a special order and not cheap compared to others. Many people go with stockton wheel. If original oem isn't a priority, than an axle swap. Depending on the shape of things, resale values can be quite a bit higher for stock vehicles in good shape.

As far as brakes go, many owners live with what they have with no problems. If you have parts that are not easily sourced, then it's networking with other IH'ers for leads on the new or used that's out there. With a service manual and some mechanical skills, it could be fun. Mine are.
