I am getting ready to put my 392 back in my Travelall and am going to service the tranny as well, but I realized I do not know for sure what transimission fluid to use. Any suggestions?

I beleive the tranny fluid that was called for at the time was the version of dexron which was currently used then. Since then, however the dexron specs have changed a few times, so what you would get off the shelf now is not the same. The dexron specs are "backwards compatible" which means you can use the latest version in the transmission you have.

You also have the option of stepping up to a more highly fortified atf in the way of the swepco 714-20 product, it can replace the dexron which was called for in your tranny. It is available through the ihon purchase page, Jeff sells it by the gallon.

The swepco 714-20 has a higher flash point, as well as higher additives, for more protection and cooler operation.

One more ? Will dexron/mercron work. I am wanting to run it for a few 100 miles to break in the mototr/cam good and then I will service the transmission and I already have some of that? Just curious. Thanks

Ok I read that and ran down to our local parts store to grab a few qrts and all I could find was dexron vi synthetic. Wasnt sure about the syntheic part so I did not get anything. Would that be ok or is there a dexron non synthetic available that our parts store May not have that would be better?

According to GM, the dexron vi (which is actually a semi-synthetic oil) replaces all other dexron specifications, therefore according to GM, all previous specs are now obsolete.

If you can still find the dexron iii, or the dexron iii/mercon v, those are not synthetic transmission oils and they would be closer to the oem recommendation given by the oem of your unit. I believe dexron vi came into existence with the year 2004 model GM vehicles. So finding the dexron iii on the shelf now will mean it is probably at least 7 years old.....you might not have a choice if you are going the dexron route.
