Can I determine the year of my motor by the casting numbers under the valve cover?I saw a big 68 and was wondering if that was a year in the casting?

You will find all sorts of numbers cast in various engine components. Some are actual part numbers for the casting only, some are production codes, mold identification numbers, etc. Some parts May have a number set that can have a date code extrapolated.

In order to be able to make any sort of I.d. Of the number sets, you should pick up a copy of the service manual and the parts l;ist for the vehicle and study the entire manual preface for number identification.

There is a date code on the "back" of the engine block -- "center" / firewall...

If you search on the binder planet, you should find a post where someone listed the years that match the letter

but, the head could have been replaced...

As mm stated, do not think there is a date code on the heads -- you might find an IH part number (nnnnnncn or nnnnnnrn) where someone with a whole lot of IH parts catalog might be able to come close (a year range?)
