152 engine noise

I just finished rebuilding my 152 and got it in the truck ran great for about 15 miles and then it started making noise sounded like a rod bearing but as I ran it and listened around it has started to quiet down it can be heard through all rpm's and the noise seems to be most noticeable using a stethoscope on the top of the engine toward the rear and I have no idea what it could be it is fairly quiet now and the engine still seems to run fine (but I did park it). I am looking for any advice or ideas I really do not want to pull and rebuild again unless have to so I will provide a little background on the rebuild and see what people think.

This is not my first engine rebuild I have rebuilt a handful of dodge and Chevy motors and one IH 152 all successful. I had the head and block machined by a very good machine shop they bored it .040" over and installed new cam bearings. I reused the crank and cam because they were in good condition but I had to replace my lifters because they were mixed up by a falling box (this is the only thing I am worried about, mixing new lifters and old cam) I also replaced my rocker assembly with a good used one that I cleaned and refurbished using the thread on this website. I installed the rocker assembly by first torquing it down then installing the push rods I primed the entire system using directions from this site and had oil flow up to the rockers and about 40psi oil pressure I used engine assembly lube on everything broke it in using rotella 15w-40 and comp cams break in additive. The oil is still clean with no visible metal particulate.

If anybody has any ideas or advice please post.

P.s. I also measured all bearing and thrust clearances using the service manual for reference and torqued everything to spec

Most likely is a stickey valve stem or lifter. Did you install stem seals?

I would start by cutting the filter open and washing the element in solvent. Look for iron particulate that would indicate a cam wiping out. Also copper.

Ok I will cut open the filter tonight. Yes I did install new valve stem seals I also took extra care to make sure the square seals were not twisted

I figured it out! I went out to warm it up and dump the oil to check for particulate and the noise was louder so I poked my head underneath and clearly see that it was the clutch fork bouncing around in the throwout bearing I just need a stiffer return spring and it golden! Thank you Robert for your response.

Glad to help and very glad the solution was so simple. If you're like me, I tend assume the worst and like to be pleasantly suprised.
