1210 oil pump Question

Hey new guy checkin in. I'm going through a 392 that I pulled out of a truck a couple of weeks ago at the local pic-a-part.

I took the oil pump apart and didn't notice which way the oil pressure relief piston goes. It has a flat end and a beveled end.

Does the beveled end go in 1st and then the spring goes against the flat end? The oil pump is an original IH pump in case that matters.

Here's me and the new toy.

Don't trust those pick-a-part chain hoists. Had one shear the pin (.175") and dropped a sv345 from all the way up.
We left it all there.
That looks like a good one, nice score.

This was at the brand new yard so maybe this hoist is still in good shape. Had no problem pulling the 392/727 out as a unit.

I really scored on this one. Bearings are std and marked 6-72 as are the mains, no unusual wear. Rings had a .040 gap so they gotta go, no wear in the bores. The valves held solvent all afternoon.

A couple of lifters were beginning to cup and the cam bearings had a couple of bad spots.

So it's getting hot tanked, new cam bearings, new cam and lifters, honed, rings, mains and rods and a valve grind.

Internally it was spotless. I was able to pull the lifters out with a magnet it was so clean. The rockers slid right off the rocker shafts and theres no goo inside them.

The oil pump was also in great shape. No grooves in the pump or cover and no chips out of the gears.

Should out last the pickup once I go through it.

Here it is on a test run. :p

Dude, you're an animal. That cell phone vid is priceless! I once fired up a vw motor blocked up on the garage floor, but this is hilarious. Great score. Hope it all works out!

Its coming along slowly. I'm double and tripple checking everything. Spent an evening "adjusting" the oil holes in the cam bearings. Been putting in a piston or 2 a day in it as time allows. I'm reusing the pistons. Just cleaning the ring grooves out, new rings and a quick brush on the top to get the loose carbon off the tops.

4 pistons in as of last night.

Industrial dodge red ftw

As of Friday I had the pistons in, pump in ,timing cover on , oil filter on and the pan on.

Got the engine off the table and onto an engine stand.

I have a distributer thats missing the gear so I threw that into the hole. Dumped a gallon of sae30 rotella into the pan.

Spun the distributer with vicegrips by hand. I have oil getting to the lifter galleys but since theres no lifters it just dumps out the 2 rear lifter holes. At least I know that it is oiling there properly.

Had a friend slowly turn the crankshaft as I kept spinning the oil pump untill oil came up the holes that supply the rockers with oil.

It squirted pretty far! Got me in the chest.:rolleyes5:

now I'm just waiting on the machine shop to finish the heads. I talked to him on Friday and he seemed to think that the guides and valve stems were going to be ok.

Hopefully I will get the heads back this week.

Then I can add a couple more qts of oil and the special cam break in lube I bought, prime it again then install it in the truck.

Man you scored one on that one wish I could find stuff like that here in georgia. Only thing I can see that would make it sweeter is injecting it . Great lookin buildup on the block and glad to see your doin it right. Best of luck and get us a vid of the next fire up.
