Default Just Purchased - Am I nuts?

So I just purchases this 1963 Scout 80.
Looks to be in rough shape but will find out more next week when it is delivered.
For those of you who have taken on a project like this, could you provide some feedback on what you see in the pics?

You're not nuts if you have plenty of time and money or both!!! If you have anymore information you may get better feedback.

Well I also think that you are not crazy and that with a lot of time and money you can have the car that you imagine in your head. Also you will have to work hard to make it look much better and when you finish it you will be very proud of the final result, it will be beautiful.

Thanks for replies guys.
I will start the build thread in a couple weeks once we do the basics to see where the truck is at.
Again thanks!

It is hard to find a Scout or Scout II that isn't rotten up here in Canada. I wish I had have bought south of the border for my initial purchase as in the end it would have been thousands cheaper even with shipping than the rotten SSII i bought for to many thousandths to start lol.

Well it looks like we are going to start this project this week
Vehicle is at the shop I've know for several years they.
They specialize in building hot rods from old trucks so this is up their alley. Still, the head body man said he would quit if the owner took the project haha.
Number one, it runs. So that's a plus but I have some questions for you experienced guys .
I want this truck to drive. Weekend trips, dog in the back, comfortable and reliable .
Do I replace the entire engine and transmission suspension etc?
Obviously this is where I am stuck and the guys doing the build need to know.
Please give me your thoughts on how to begin this 63 scout 80
Thanks in advance

Depends on what you want, a new drive train or an original drive train. And how much money you've got and want to spend.

With its current drive train and depending on gearing you might not be cruising 60-70 mph.

An LS based drive train will likely cost upwards of $5k and that's you doing the work. If you're paying a shop to do all this you're going to have a $20K+ labour bill easily.

Ok, today I went to the MTO (HMV in the US), and they tell me when it was last registered in 1979 it was a 1966 Scout.
The vin plate states its a Scout 80, made in Hamilton Ontario Canada but no year is provided on the vin plate.
I didn't think they made 80s in '66?
Anyway, I took the ownership as opposed to debate things.
Can someone tell me is there a definitive way of finding out the year?

I don't know how much data is available on Canadian IH's but the US versions build year can be closely mapped by production sequence number. You can acquire the Line Setting Ticket and it will have the date of manufacturer on it. But again, I don't know what is available for Canadian born Scouts.

Here is the VIN plate.
I read something about the first number being the year it was made
ie) 2 = 1962
3 = 1963

I see a 5 as the first digit, which doesnt make sense, BC Scouts were only made in Hamilton '62 & '63 or so I've read.

Become a member over at binderplanet and get a hold of binderbookie Jim Allen. He is the one that wrote the Scout encyclopedia and he has all the build dates etc. And yes they were only built in Canada for 2 years.

Yeah, we are probably nuts but what can ya do, eh. Maybe its just a mid-life crisis haha.
I doubled down and bought a second scout 80, 1962.
Reason being the body has a few panels and doors that are better than mine.

To add to the above post with pics, I think I have what I need to put together a decent body for the guys putting it all together.
Next item is the drive / power-train.
My needs for this truck is a day to day drive during the summer months. Comfortable, reliable, and able to handle highway speeds.
I am thinking that the best option is to use a Chevy Vortec 4.3 V6 for motor. I would think that getting a full engine, transmission and axles might be the best route. Rebuild all of it to ensure quality.
My question is the drive shaft and making it match the 100" wheel base.
Does anyone have tips or information on what they might recommend for drive shaft or even if there is a better drivetrain for my needs.
Thanks everyone.
