Default Gas to diesel tank changes

I am in the finishing stages of a 4bt conversion. I have not dealt with the tank yet. What do I need to do to change the system from gas to diesel? Lines, fuel pump, filler etc...

Anyone have any ideas? Were there two variations from the factory?

The fuel tanks were basically the same. Diesel tanks had no extra emission ports on the tank so those will need to be capped off. The fuel sending unit is the same but you will need to remove the filter on the end of it. Otherwise I don't recall anything else needing to be changed.

Diesels need a return line, at least IH ones do.

If you have a fuel pump or "lift pump" on the engine you should be good. I know on the 6bt the lift pump and filter are both on the engine. If they are not, then you would need to add a filter and pump inline somewhere.

As for the lines, I would run a new 3/8 steel line for the pressure side and use the stock line for the return... Imho

Thanks for the replies. Yes the 4bt does require a return. It does have a block mounted lift pump and filter. I understand that most people run a 1/2" supply and 3/8" return. I should be dropping the tank soon. Almost out of the garage.

1/2" supply, wow! That must be for modified engines. It's hard to imagine a 3.9l 4cyl needing that big of a line!

Glad you're making progress! Can't wait to see it!

Actually they're called a " supply pump ".supply's the inj.pump on diesel's. Also, the only thing to change on the fuel tank is the filter sock, they're alway's gummed up usually by moisture. Or add a return line in it, if there isn't 1 already in it.other than that no real difference. Did many a gas to diesel conversion's in vehicle's. Never really need to drop the tank unless there was a previous problem. Jeff
