Default 1970 1200D overheats when idleing

1970 1200D 4x4, 392, 3spd auto

The truck runs and drives great, though presently it's role is limited to being my yard truck until I can afford to do something more exciting with it. So I don't generally drive it for more than an hour or two at a time.

The issue I'm having is the truck seems to overheat at idle, when the truck is in gear running down the road the temp guage heads right back to a more comfortable position. When stopped it starts to climb back up again.

I don't see any coolant leaking from the overflow or the radiator itself and when I checked they are always where I left them nice and full.

If it has a clutch on the fan, it might be bad.

Like Robert said, if clutched and you can flick the blade with your finger while the engine is stopped and it spins easy like a roulette wheel, its shot. A clutched blade should move when finger pressure is applied, but there should be some felt resistance and it should stop moving as soon as your fingers break contact with the blade.
You aren't one of these guys with your spare tire mounted in front of the grille, are you? That's a big no-no. Obstructions in front of the radiator should be kept to a minimum.
Is the fan shroud still intact?
