clip 77 SS2 D44 Axle Spindle Stub Needle Bearing

Rebuilding front axle and gears. Hubs are Dualmatic. In the hub spindle there is a small needle bearing (ID ~ 1.3”) inside the spindle with a composite bushing/seal on back side of that bearing. I can’t get it removed. Have pilot bearing removal tool bit it doesnt want to move. Before I get too heavy handed, can someone advise best, safe removal tips?

They can be tough to get out. I use a drift punch inserted thru the threaded end of the spindle to drive them out.

Thanks Jeff. Got ‘em.
Next up is the rear axle. 4.09 to 3.08 gears. And all bearings/seals while at it. Wheel bearings..... I think axle has the retainer rings that must be cut/chiseled-off. Any pointers before i get going?

And now I am reminded how soon I want to upgrade to rear disc brakes. Drum brakes...i may never get them back together :-)
Been a while.

Cut deep enough, but not too deep. This will be the perfect time to change out your inadequate bearing retainer plates that don't actually retain the bearing and axle shaft in the event of a failure...for some extra thick ones that will keep the bearing and axle shaft from walking out. IHPA has 'em.
