Default NEW SCOUT OWNER!!!!

Hi everyone im a new owner of a 1979 Scout II with a 304 v8 and 4' lift can someone help me out on some info? I currently need a new carb I current have a edelbrock 4 barrel 650 that's to big n bogs new a new carb any info or forums I should look at or ask on to get the right one??? And I'm also looking to tow a boat that about 5500-6000lbs anyone have any feed back on towing???

I've had that carb on IH motors and it worked pretty good. As far as towing goes when you get that motor worked out and running right IH motors were built for towing. Hook up your 6000lb boat and drive. I tow my tanker of a boat all the time with 7 people in my Travelall and the boat filled with camping stuff for a 3 day weekend over donner summit headed to englebright, shasta, oroville or bullards bar and it tows the whole load no problem. Enjoy the Scout.

Thanks boss yea I have heard from ppl that I shouldn't tow cause of my 4" lift but I actually bought the thing to tow it and off roading I appreciate ur reply any recommendations on a carb??

A quick note on the 304's. They only had a 2 bbl carburetor from IH thus only a 2 bbl manifold was available. That was until one of the IH parts dealers had a 4 bbl manifold cast in aluminum...
Are 100% sure you have the 304 under the hood? Possible the Scout could have a 345 in 79 which would have the 4bbl.

If you have the edlebrock 4bbl carb you either have this aluminum 4bbl mani, a 345, or a crappy adapter. The 2 to 4 bbl adapters are worthless..

If you would, please post a photo of your carb arrangement. Then I can point you in the correct direction..

I've done a lot of rv and some boat towing with a 4" lifted Scout. Mine's a 345 and there is plenty of power there, the weak areas are the brakes and handling. If your boat trailer has brakes you're good to go there. I've found the torsion bar load leveling hitch makes the handling much better. It depends on the balance of your trailer though.

The other thing that makes a huge difference is proper tire pressure. All this assumes that your suspension is in good shape and that the bushings in the spring eyes are not worn out.

At first look I thought you had the aluminum manifold...then I noticed the cap on the brake reservoir and the water neck look to be the same color so it's probably just painted. The part he needs to see is the base of the carburetor...I think mostly to see if it's an adapter plate which I agree is a worthless set up. The 2 bbl carbs go pretty good on the IH motor. Like I said and I know it's not everyones favorite but sitting on the proper manifold the edelbrock carb works pretty good. I have one on my 392 in my Travelall and get decent mileage and she runs smooth and never stumbles. I had a carter in my travelette before we went cummins, basically same as the edelbrock and I liked it there as well, I just extended the vent in case of a big slosh and it was a wheeling beast. Seems like I've pulled every Jeep in Nevada out of somewhere but maybe there are a few left.
