Default Help needed - front axle id

So I recently just purchased a 1970 Scout 800a with the 304 v8. I was told from the previous owner that both axles are currently Dana 44s. I am wanting to do a disc brake conversion so I figured I better double check before ordering the parts. I tried running the bom on the Dana expert but nothing came up so my guess is that it is pre 1977. The bom is 603142-2. Can anyone help me verify that this is an actual Dana 44 front? Or maybe what vehicle it came from? Much appreciated in advance!!

Dana 44 FA first arrived on the Scout scene with the '74 model year, and even then it wasn't standard equipment until the following year. Your Scout would have originally had a Dana 30 front axle with drum brakes. If you have a 44 in the front now, it was swapped in by a previous owner, most likely from a '74 or later Scout II. There are some SII D44 front axles out there with drum brakes, but the vast majority of them have disc brakes. The fact that you still have drums in the front makes be doubt the claim of your PO. It is more likely still the original D30 up front. A good picture of the differential cover would tell that tale.

Using the link below, I found a BOM that is really close to what you have, being only one digit off (603144-2) for a '69-70 Scout Dana 30 FA with 3.73 to 1 ratio and open differential. Go to page 164 just part way down.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate you helping me find that info! So do you think its safe to assume the front axle is most likely a Dana 30?

Yeah, I've been under that assumption from the jump. I've learned to always take what previous owners say with a YOUGE grain of salt, until it can be verified. Especially when it comes to engine sizes and axle ID. But, like I said earlier, a quick pic of your diff cover will put all speculation to rest.

That's a 30. What's up with the booty-fab action on the tie rod?

Quick way to tell is the cover on the 30 is symmetrical, and the cover on a 44 is not. If you look at the cover on the 44 in the back you will see the difference.

I have this same axle on a Scout 800 (was told it is a 1965). Same Part Number 603142. What is the axle model number?

Your drag link/tie rod looks like factory equipment to me for Scout 80/800.
