Default Betsy's Red Carpet Special

In 2012 IHPA got the honor of performing a mechanical restoration on Betsy blumes 1964 Scout 80 red carpet special. For those who do not know Betsy, she is the grand daughter of the late Ted Ornas, the creator and inventor of the Scout. Very much into International's and keeping the legacy alive, Betsy purchased this Scout to enjoy the IH Scout lifestyle that we all enjoy today thanks to her grandfather Ted. But it wasn't long before the Scout, named Arizona, started showing its age with multiple break downs so it was determined that this Scout needed some tlc.

In this build we will go over the mechanical restoration of this rare and special Scout 80. The goal during this build was to reuse as much of the original Scout as possible and use as much original IH parts as possible.

After a long trip from texas the Scout was unloaded from the auto transporter.

With Arizona here we made sure it got along with the other scouts.

With introductions over the first thing that was needed was to remove all the caked on bugs from the journey over here from texas.

After being cleaned up Arizona was shown where the restoration on her would be performed.

With Arizona up on the lift and initial inspection of the drivetrain was performed.

The front differential looked like it hadn't seen the light in some decades as the lube looked something like baby poop.

The steering box was leaking lube.

The suspension was showing its age.

All in all things didn't look to bad but never count your chickens before they hatch.

The oil pan was removed so that an inspection could be performed.

Pieces of bearing, most likely from the camshaft bearings, were found in the pan. This is somewhat a common occurence on these old original IH engines.

With a basic inspection performed we began the removal of the body from the frame.

Arizona's body almost completely lifted off of the frame.

With the body off we could continue our inspection on the rest of the drivetrain.

The transmission mounts were in severe need of replacement.

And a thick, nasty coat of grease and grime covered the top of the transmission and transfer case.

So before further dis-assembly could continue michael gave the entire frame and drivetrain a good pressure washing.

Cleaned up the rolling chassis and drivetrain was rolled back in the shop.

An interesting thing to note was the way IH painted the shifters red as part of being a red carpet special.

Darren and I begin removing the engine, transmission and transfer case.

With the transmission on the bench it could be torn into.

Same with the engine. With it on a engine stand we could begin the dis-assembly.

Like much of the engine the water pump had seen better days.

With the engine torn down we could get a better idea on how the rest of it looked.

We found that the engine was flat out wore out. Initially we had hoped to just perform a simple re-ring and bearings but it was crying out for more. So the heart of Arizona was crated up and sent off to our engine rebuilder.

With the engine off to the rebuilder we got to the task of tearing down the rest of the frame and chassis.

All the suspension hardware was inspected.

Some parts like this shackle was nearly completely worn out.

We next started on the tear down and inspection of the front axle and what we found was alarming.

At some point in Arizona's life the front axle housing was severely damaged. After all the grease was pressure washed off of the housing this extremely poor attempt to repair this axle housing was discovered.

And with the differential removed the crack on the inside of the axle housing was quite apparent.

The remaining front axle parts were inspected.

And it was decided that a donor axle be pulled out from another Scout and torn down so it could be used in the front of Arizona.

The factory optioned warn overdrive was inspected and found to be in need of a rebuild.

The spicer/Dana 18 transfer case was good only needing fresh gaskets and seals.

The t90 three speed transmission was also disassembled and inspected.

The frame was inspected and sanded down to prepare for being painted.

Certain parts like this leafspring hanger had to have some welding and grinding work done in order to repair the deep gouges left from over nearly 50 years of service.

With frame repairs done a coat of black paint was applied.

Other parts like the frame crossmembers and leafsprings were cleaned and given a fresh coat of paint.

More parts were cleaned and painted.

After hour upon hour of cleaning and painting parts final assembly could begin of the rolling chassis.

The new to Arizona front axle housing was installed and oem Dana wiper felt kits installed.

Next the front brakes were installed.

Followed by the wheel bearing hubs.

As much original hardware was used throughout the project.

And finally the locking hubs were restored to like new condition.

After being completely rebuilt the rear differential, transmission and transfer case were given a coat of paint.

Just like the front all new brakes were installed on the rear axle.

New engine and transmission mounts were installed.

With the rolling chassis done it was onto the engine.

Back from the engine rebuilder the engine was already painted and ready for all its parts to be reinstalled.

Up on the stand and rotated over allowed install of the oil pump.

Finally coming together after days of restoring all the individual parts.

One trick we like to do is to modernize the air cleaner without it being noticed. We take the original oil bath air cleaner and gut it out removing the filter media from the upper lid. A paper element is installed and with the lid back on no one knows the difference and no more messy oil spills out of the air cleaner.

With the engine back into place the rebuilt t90 transmission could be installed.

Here I am working away on the little Scout.

A few pictures of the completed drivetrain ready to be mated back to the body.

But before the body could be dropped back down onto the frame a few things needed to be done.

With our shop "mega-bodylift" installed we were able to get the Scout up in the air so that its underside could get a proper pressure washing.

After cleaning the underside was taped off.

And a fresh layer of undercoating was applied.

Before dropping down the body a few last things were done like adding quality swepco oil to the engine.

Some last few details were repaired in the engine compartment like this electrical harness.

With everything ready to go the body was put up on the lift.

The chassis rolled underneath.

And the body was lowered back down into place.

Back in the air to see how things came together I get the sign from Darren that all looks good.

Things are looking real good all cleaned up and put back together.

Some can't wait to go for a ride.

After some test driving of Arizona......

........and showing at the 6th annual IH Sierra Fall Rallye was loaded up and headed home back to texas.
