Nice Scout! Are those 35x15.5 boggers? Throw on some new paint and that baby will be killer!

Scout-n-josh,
that's a sweet rig.
This might be a dumb question, but, I'm new here and also new to scouts.
I'm in sacramento, and just picked one up and I would like to find a 392 and a 4 speed to swap in place of the tired 345/ 727.
But I was just wondering, what are the benefit's to running a 345 head on a 392, and is it a bolt on deal ?
Also, do you know what vehicles came stock with a 392, so I can keep an eye open at the local p-n-p's ?
Thanks for your help, fred.

Hey fred! Thanks for the compliment! The 392 are typically found in a medium duty truck, like a school bus or dump truck. And the 345 heads up the compression from, iirc, 8 to about 9.5 lbs or so.

Happy scouting!

Josh

392's also can be found in the f/s pickalls. The 345 heads will only work on a non-improved cooling 392. There is a serial number cut-off on 392 engines between the ic and nic changeover. Also, you need to take into account which type of pistons the engine has, as in flat-top or dome. Heads that don't match the piston style can cause clearance issues. If you do a forum search, you should come across a recent thread which covered these issues in more depth. Imho, unless you already have some outstanding 345 heads ready to go, the tiny almost negligable bump in compression simply isn't worth all the bs. My advice is to either freshen up your 345, or find a suitable replacement 345/392 that is complete and go with that. If you do swap in a 392, you will need to retain your Scout II oil pump/pickup, oil pan, flex plate, starter spacer and motor mounts and swap them over to the 392. Also, not all IH engines were cast with the same motor mount bosses. Before you plunk down money on one, be sure to verify that it's been drilled to accept the sii mounts that are near the front of the engine on either side.

Wow, been awhile since my last update. Since my last post I have made some updated/mods to the Scout. Went to a 1-ton drivetrain, dodge d60 cut & turned front, cross-over steering, 14bolt rear, 5.13 gears and 39.5 rocks. Used Jeff's front spring hangers and some other IH only parts. I'd love to do a write-up build-up sometime when I hopefully get some time. Here's some recent pics:

Looks like I'll have to trim just a bit more...

Lol...the girlfriend driving the Scout:
